It’s Election Time: Support People with Disabilities to Vote
The Centre for Community Engaged Learning would like to invite you to an initiative called: It’s Election Time: Support People with Disabilities to Vote. During our kick-start event, participants will brainstorm ideas of what we can do to make the federal election more accessible in Vancouver, plan a one month ‘voting accessibility’ project to carry out with others, and hear from community specialists on some of the barriers people with disabilities face to civic engagement. This initiative is taking place in collaboration with Community Living BC, Disability Alliance of BC, Developmental Disabilities Association, and the UBC Centre for Inclusion and Citizenship.

The UBC Inclusive Campus project – Student Actor Position
The UBC Inclusive Campus project—a cutting-edge team of faculty, staff, clinicians and students —has heard students and clinicians with disabilities in the health professions express hurdles to their participation, in particular due to stigma and attitudinal barriers. They are now creating a play based on the stories using an innovative, drama-based approach. They are looking for a student with a disability with acting skills, who is interested in joining the cast. Research will take place April-June (approximately 20 hours in total) with few performances (1-3) throughout this period. This will be a paid position.

CDSA Conference Volunteer Opportunity
The Canadian Disability Studies Association conference will take place in Vancouver, June 1-3. They are looking for volunteers to monitor the sessions and registration table. In return you will be able to attend the sessions when you are not on duty. Here is the website of the association.

National Young Leaders Program
| Registration for the National Young Leaders Program is open online. If you are aged 17 – 30 and living with vision loss of any kind, you are now able to sign-up for the three in-person Summits that will be held across Canada this year.

Exciting details for next month’s Vancouver Summit are beginning to take shape: first, it will be held in the incredible Garibaldi room on the 31st floor of the Blue Horizons Hotel, which offers a 270-degree view of downtown Vancouver. Second, the Summit will feature the one and only Donovan Tildesley, the Canadian Paralympic swimmer and 2008 flag bearer who lives with blindness as a result of an inherited retinal disease.
More information on the Vancouver Summit will be announced shortly, including additional speakers and workshops. Once you register you will be on our list to receive financial support for travel and accommodations, should you require it. We will be booking blocks of hotel rooms in each city, but you need to sign-up now so that we can finalize numbers.

Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – BC Youth Peer Support Program
Join us for a weekend to connect with your fellow peers and challenge life together with confidence and positivity! We will have a variety of interactive sessions, both indoors and outdoors as well as free time.
Who: deaf and hard of hearing youth ages 18 to 30 (1-day option available for ages 15 to 17)

THE CANADIAN HARD OF HEARING ASSOCIATION – 2019 SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
This program was established in 2002 by the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association and to date we have awarded $48,000.00 to ensure students with hearing loss have equal access to educational opportunities.
The deadline for applications for the 2019 academic year must be submitted by March 8, 2019 at 3pm EST. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered nor will applications be accepted by mail, e-mail or fax.
The following scholarships have been established to assist students with hearing loss:
Carrell Hearn Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
This scholarship is being offered by the North Shore Branch in memory of Carrell Hearn a resident of West Vancouver, BC who passed away in 2014 at the age of 105. Carrell was a long-time member and generous supporter of the CHHA North Shore Branch as well as a number of other local North Shore charities.
Dr. Charles A. Laszlo Scholarship ($1,000)
The Dr. Charles A. Laszlo Scholarship requires that the applicant be enrolled in the second or higher year of study in the area of Science and Technology and Trades. In addition, the applicant must also display an interest in supporting activities to improve the lives of those who have hearing loss following the example of Dr. Laszlo’s commitment and work on behalf of the hard of hearing community.
Frank Algar Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)
The Frank Algar Scholarship does not focus on any field of study; however, the advocacy level of the applicant is taken into account. The Algar family wishes to continue to support the work of their father who was a strong advocate of for hard of hearing people and people with disabilities.
Susan Brown Memorial Scholarship ($2,000)
The Susan Brown Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in memory of Susan Brown, Chairperson of the CHHA-NL Families Resource Group who passed away in 2017. This scholarship is sponsored annually by the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association-Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL) and is offered to hard of hearing, late-deafened and oral deaf students entering their first-year, full time program at a recognised Canadian college or university in any area of study, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a diploma, certificate or degree.

UBC Awards for Students with Disabilities
The deadline for students with disabilities to apply for UBC Awards for Students with Disabilities is September 15th. Note: this is a change from the past when the deadline was Oct. 15th. Students can apply for the awards on-line (https://students.ubc.ca/enrolment/finances/awards-scholarships-bursaries/awards-disabilities). The on-line process is designed to be accessible. However, if any students encounter accessibility issues with the online form, please contact the Centre for Accessibility at accessibility@ubc.ca.
Only students who are not registered with the CfA need to submit medical documentation. Students registered with our office do not need to include medical documentation with their application.
