The UBC Inclusive Campus project – Student Actor Position

The UBC Inclusive Campus project—a cutting-edge team of faculty, staff, clinicians and students —has heard students and clinicians with disabilities in the health professions express hurdles to their participation, in particular due to stigma and attitudinal barriers. They are now creating a play based on the stories using an innovative, drama-based approach. They are looking for a student with a disability with acting skills, who is interested in joining the cast.  Research will take place April-June (approximately 20 hours in total) with few performances (1-3) throughout this period. This will be a paid position.

CDSA Conference Volunteer Opportunity

The Canadian Disability Studies Association conference will take place in Vancouver, June 1-3. They are looking for volunteers to monitor the sessions and registration table. In return you will be able to attend the sessions when you are not on duty. Here is the website of the association.

National Young Leaders Program

Registration for the National Young Leaders Program is open online. If you are aged 17 – 30 and living with vision loss of any kind, you are now able to sign-up for the three in-person Summits that will be held across Canada this year.

And if you know someone who meets the criteria and would benefit from the Program, which is focused on career development and mentorship, please pass this invitation along. The three Summits are:

  • Summit 1: Vancouver (April 27 and 28)
  • Summit 2: Halifax (September 14 and 15)
  • Summit 3: Toronto (October 5 and 6)

Exciting details for next month’s Vancouver Summit are beginning to take shape: first, it will be held in the incredible Garibaldi room on the 31st floor of the Blue Horizons Hotel, which offers a 270-degree view of downtown Vancouver. Second, the Summit will feature the one and only Donovan Tildesley, the Canadian Paralympic swimmer and 2008 flag bearer who lives with blindness as a result of an inherited retinal disease.

Once you register you will be on our list to receive financial support for travel and accommodations, should you require it. We will be booking blocks of hotel rooms in each city, but you need to sign-up now so that we can finalize numbers.

BCANDS is working with in partnership with Plan Institute on this project.  Plan Institute is a non-profit social enterprise that works to improve the lives of people with disabilities. For further information go to www.planinstitute.ca

Safe and Secure is a guide book of resources, supports, stories and art supporting people with disabilities and their families. The new Indigenous version will be published by BCANDS and will be free to families, individuals, and support workers.

We are inviting contributions of (unpublished) Poems; Songs; Personal Stories; and Artwork from Indigenous individuals or family members who have experience of living with disability.

Wingspan presents – Mind and Music Matters

Join Sarah Jickling and Greg McLeod from My Good Bad Luck Band for an evening whimsical indie-pop songs. Canadian songstress and mental health advocate, this 26 year old uses her performances to create mental health awareness. Her music has been featured on radio stations across the country and in independent films. She has opened up about her experiences with Bipolar Disorder and Anxiety Disorder on radio, local television, podcasts, blogs and at live speaking events. Her new album, When I Get Better, was released July 14th, 2017. She can be found in hospital waiting rooms and pole dancing studios around Vancouver, BC.

Then, kick back with Vancouver Adapted Music Society artists The Jeff Standfield Band. Singer/guitarist Jeff will be joined by Dave Symington on drums, bassist Graeme Wyman & special guest Dan Moxon (Bend Sinister) on Keyboards.

NEWORLD THEATRE – KING ARTHUR’S NIGHT

Neworld Theatre brings us theatre at its most transformative. This production is a work of radical upheaval, in which the King Arthur legend is made fresh for our eyes. Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere—they’re all present in this tale of love, honour and war. New to us are the live band, the 20-person choir and, most of all, the radically inclusive cast. The players in this drama, all professional, include people whose life experience includes Down syndrome. They stand on stage defined by their extraordinary perspectives.

King Arthur’s Night

Inclusive Campus project at UBC

In this phase, we study the efficacy of a newly developed blended learning module for students with disabilities. Your role in the study would be to participate in and evaluate the content of the blended learning module.

DREAM stands for Disclosure, Rights and REsponsibilities, & Advocacy and Accommodations Module. The purpose of DREAM is to educate and provide skills to students with disabilities in health and human science disciplines in a barrier-reduced learning environment.

If you are a student with lived experience as an individual with a visible and/or non-visible disability we would like to invite you to help us.

You are eligible to participate in this study if you are 19 years of age or older, and meet the following criteria:

1) Living with a visible and/or non-visible disability as a student or clinician in one of the 14 health and human science programs
