Women’s Opportunity Awards

If you’re a woman student and a parent, the below award opportunity might be of interest:

The Women’s Opportunity Awards program assists women who provide the primary source of financial support for their families by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects.

Each year, more than $1.5 million in education grants are awarded to more than 1,000 women, many of whom have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, domestic violence and/or drug and alcohol abuse. Women’s Opportunity Award recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation.

In addition to providing the primary financial support for their families, eligible applicants must be enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program and must demonstrate financial need.

The deadline for applications is February 1, 2014.
Please visit http://www.soroptimistvancouver.org/womens-opportunity-awards/for more information. The application form is found at http://www.soroptimistvancouver.org/woa-application/

Vancouver Inspiration Pass – Two Weeks of Free Family Fun

Did you know that the Vancouver Public Library has a program that offers free access to popular Vancouver museums and attractions for you and your family for a two-week period?

It is called the Vancouver Inspiration Pass and is designed to make it possible for all Vancouver families to explore the city. With the pass, you get free access to several attractions, museums, heritage sites, and fitness facilities. Why not bring the kids to H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, Science World, the Vancouver Art Gallery, or for a concert at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra? Check out the full list of available options here.

The downside of the pass is of course that it is only valid for a two-week period. But for those two weeks, you can go to as many of the listed museums and attractions as you can possibly fit into your schedule! So make sure to book a pass for a period where you are not swamped with school work. Another idea is to ally yourself with other student parents and request passes for different periods, so you can take each other’s children to events. Then the fun lasts longer!

One pass gives free access for two adults and up to four children. The pass holder must be a Vancouver resident aged 14 years or older and hold a Vancouver Public Library Card, but there are no similar restrictions on the people you bring with you.

The pass is very popular, so make sure to apply early! You can apply online or at any VPL library branch. For more information, contact the Vancouver Public Library at 604-331-3603 or info@vpl.ca.

Early Care and Learning plan presentation

Dear UBC Child Care Staff and Parents:

Do you have concerns about child care in BC, such as the lack of access to high quality care, or other issues? Did you spend a long time on a wait list for child care? Are you worried that there are too many people having to choose sub-standard care for their children? The Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC and the Early Childhood Educators of BC have put together a well-researched plan based on concerns they have heard from people all over the province. They are presenting it to the provincial government, and would like to hear your feedback (and garner your support if possible, to help put pressure on the government to change the situation). The plan allows for $10 per day child care and $25 per hour average wage for child care workers. The UBC Child Care Parent Council has arranged for them to give a presentation on this plan that is free and open to anyone and everyone.

When: Tuesday, Jan. 17, 7pm
Where: UBC Child Care Main Office, in the gym

Please RSVP if you plan to come, so we know how many handouts to have available: daycareadvocacy@gmail.com

Hope to see you there!

Christina Hendricks
President, UBC Child Care Parent Council
