Introduction

Notice: As of 2022, photographic records will be posted to my iNaturalist account for wider sharing and verification. Below, you will find observations uploaded prior to 2022, and featuring those from Central Karakoram locations.

This page provides photographic and other information (date of flowering, elevation and location where/when photographed) about plant taxa surveyed or sighted by Nina Hewitt or Ken Hewitt over the last couple of decades. N Hewitt’s records include those obtained in the Central Karakoram (Skardu region) in July 2016 (see details here) and during previous visits to the Western Karakoram (Gilgit/Naltar Valley region) in June-July 1999 and 2001. K Hewitt’s records span a longer period associated with his work on glaciers of the Central and Western Karakoram.

NB: You can find historical information for some of these species and more, including the upper elevation limits and valley locations of ca. 550 species at the Historical Alpine Plant Database for the Karakoram. The database was compiled in 2016 by N Hewitt from historical sources (late 19th and early 20th century Italian expeditions to the Karakoram, and records therein) and is designed to provide a historical baseline with which to compare modern elevation limits for these species.

The photographic records below are organized by family. For those photographed by N Hewitt, voucher specimens were collected in 2016 and are stored in the Herbarium collection at Karakoram International University. Dr. S.W. Khan (Dept. Biol. Sciences, KIU) assisted with taxonomic identification and specimen collection at field sites in 2016. Please let us know if you have any suggestions or taxonomic information to add to these pages.
