ASIS&T@UBC

big-tent information science in the city of glass

Archive for the ‘housekeeping’ Category

So January 4th is almost here and we’ve got a new cohort arriving, and hopefully checking out this website here. If you are new, welcome! Just so you know, ASIS&T@UBC is the student group for all you techy kinds of archivists/librarians, but it’s not intimidating. I mean, we have a few programmers hanging around, but there are lots of history majors and the like too. Basically, if you know or don’t know about all the latest technology type things that affect information science and like to learn about them, we’d love to have you come to our meetings and participate in our events.

Our next meeting is going to be January 18, at 12:30pm, and then a week later (that’d be January 25th at the same time but a slightly different place) we’ll be having our first Cool Tools day of 2011. (For future reference here’s a handy calendar showing when all the SLAIS Student Groups have their meetings/events and such. See, this is what ASIS&T@UBC does: helpful things.) We’ll post more information here about both of those January events (and more) as time keeps dragging us into the future.

Until then, welcome and we hope you’re ready to scowl at the overused suffix “2.0″ (or maybe it’s just me who’s hoping that). In any case, don’t scowl at Susie for having to teach you about it, okay?

happy holidays

And what better way to celebrate time off from classes than by updating the blog? A recap of our November Cool Tools Day has finally gone live, and if you check the Minutes page you’ll see they’re now up to date.

(Incidentally, if you want to see the minutes of the Executive meetings, you can IF you’re a member. Let us know and we can get you all the sekrit documents about our organization your heart could desire. Or you could just search the WikiLeaks cables. I’m sure we’re in there somewhere.)

Speaking of WikiLeaks, if you’re interested in some links to good writeups on the ongoing drip, or any other information technology issues that have been catching our webmaster’s eye, you could do worse than checking out our ASIS&T@UBC linkblog or following us on Twitter @asistubc. Consider it an Xmas present to him.

  • the twitterphone is on

ASIS&T@UBC now has a twitter feed: @asistubc. We aren’t following you yet because we don’t know if you’re part of the hivemind yet. We’re very sorry. Follow us and we’ll try to keep you informed about interesting infotechy stuff that hits our feeds. It’s set up so our linkblog pings Twitter when a new story goes up there.

(You know about the linkblog, right? It is filling with links to the aforementioned cool infotechy stuff, submitted mostly without comment. Recent posts show up in the sidebar here on this page.)

And if you tell us about stuff that’s even better. All getting to use Twitter for conversation instead of just broadcasting.

  • September meeting minutes posted

The minutes for the September meeting have now been posted. You can find them in the Meeting Minutes section of the About page of this blog, or you can click here.

    Respond by July 20, 2009

To help ASIS&T student members who might not otherwise be able to participate in ASIS&T meetings, we provide  an opportunity to attend the sessions and network with other members in exchange for assisting us in running the meeting.  Students who have participated in our program have found the experience “terrific.”

    How the Program Works

In exchange for complimentary registration, we’ll ask you to help us run the conference.  You’ll serve as a room monitor for about three sessions each day for three days.  In addition, you’ll help out either at our registration desk or conference headquarters for a 4-hour period on one day of the conference.

    How to Participate

If you would like to be considered for this program, for the 2009 Annual Meeting, to be held November 6-11 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada .  Please forward your name, address, phone, fax and e-mail numbers to:

American Society for Information Science & Technology

    ATTN.: ASIS&T 2008 Annual Meeting

    1320 Fenwick Lane, Suite 510

    Silver Spring, MD 20910

    FAX: (301) 495-0810

    e-mail: lvick@asis.org

There are a limited number of positions  available, and applications are considered on a first come/first served basis, so be sure to let us know of your interest by July 20, 2009.

    February meeting minutes up

    Upcoming events

ASIS&T at UBC is pleased to announce several upcoming workshops for SLAIS students on techy tools to make your life easier. These workshops were designed and will be taught by the digital media interns at SLAIS.

Zotero – The Next Generation of Research Tools

    Terrace Lab, Jan 29th, 12-2pm

Zotero is a Firefox that helps you collect, organize and cite your research sources. Come to the workshop if you’re tired of RefWorks — or (like me) copying down citation information by hand.

Delicious and iGoogle – Gateways to Academic Success

    Terrace Lab, Feb 4th, 12-2pm

Can Delicious and iGoogle be beneficial to students and academics? Yes! Come find out how.

Delicious is a social bookmarking service that allows users to tag, save, organize, search and share web pages through the web. iGoogle provides users with a customizable web site, allowing users to put all their favorite online gadgets in one place — RSS feeds, Google Calendar, various social software, etc. It also manages URLS, usernames and passwords!
