I have always been conscious to be green throughout my daily activities, so I was surprised to see my ecological footprint score to be 5.5 global hectares. Although the number is below the averages for both Canada and Calgary, two more Earths will be needed if all the others were like me. Through this exercise, I learned that even if I were to minimize all my current overall consumptions, on diet, water, gas, and electricity consumptions, the fixed national services every Canadian is getting like basic health care and entertainment, would still contributes a significant portion to my footprint score. On the other hand, different housing types results in significantly different footprint hectares; on average, free standing houses are 1.2 hectares higher than apartments in terms of footprint score as shown in my results. This is presumably due to low efficiency of land use, as well as an inferior energy-saving system for most free standing houses. To reduce my footprint score from 5.5 to 5.0 hectares, I thought of further decrease meat consumption, choose non-processed and locally produced foods, fully switch to energy-saving light bulbs for my home and unplug electronic appliances when they are not in use.
