What is Biochar?

Biochar is carbon sequestration technology that has the potential to alleviate some of the stresses caused by climate change.  It is a charcoal like substance, but unlike the charcoal you might use as fuel for your backyard grill, biochar is use for other purposes like carbon sequestration or soil fertilization.  Another distinguishing characteristic of biochar is the pyrolysis technique used to produce biochar.  The end result of this production is a highly stable substance that is then applied to soil or used for a variety of other purposes.  This technology is not new, however, the applications of this technology for climate change mitigation are.
