Speed up your dashboard with Google Gears.

We just upgraded the UBC WordPress install which means a totally redesigned dashboard area. WordPress uses a lot of JavaScript in the dashboard so those with slow connections may experience a sluggish interface, this is where “Turbo” and Google Gears helps speed up your dashboard. Watch videos for details (Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer).

*Note former Google Gears users you may want to clear your gears cache for blogs.ubc.ca prior to upgrade and then hit the Turbo again.

Upgrading to 2.7.1

On Sunday, May 3rd, from 7 to 9 AM we will upgrade WP to 2.7.1.

Try to avoid posting during this time as you might experience a short service interruption.

While WP 2.7.1 does provide sleeker and friendlier interface, its dashboard interface is quite different from the previous WP.

Try to invest a few minutes to learn about the new dashboard – all the goodies are there but they are positioned differently.

Daily Systems Maintenance Times

For those late night bloggers out there you may notice a server slow down between 3-3:30am daily, this is when our systems maintenance scripts are run. We are hoping to do some server infrastructure changes over the summer so this is will no longer be noticeable to the end user.

Daylight saving time and post timestamp

Is your blog not in sync with your local time setting?

Here is the instruction on how to configure daylight saving time on your blog.

  1. Click on the Settings tab and that will bring you to the General Settings page
  2. Scroll down until you see Timezone, you will see that it is set to UTC -8 hour
  3. Change the time setting to UTC -7, save the change and that’s it
