First Year Blog Squad

What’s a blog?

A blog (short for web log) is like your own personal web site! The author – called a blogger – creates entries, just like writing in a journal. There are blogs on any and all topics imaginable – in fact, there’s a new blog born every half second! You can check out blogs from current students here.

Who are you looking for?

We’re looking for individuals who reflect the enormous diversity of UBC and can document their different experiences as first-year students. As a blogger, you would serve as a role model for other first-years, and as such, would be academically successful and actively involved in all that UBC has to offer.

What will the Blog Squad do?

As representatives of the first-year experience, you will update your blog with what you’re up to at least once per week. Whether you’re:

  • getting involved in a new club
  • studying for an exam
  • contemplating your major…

…we want you to share it with your classmates! Others will follow your journey, finding comfort in your common experiences, and motivation in your successes. Your entries will appear on the New to UBC site, as well as on other sites visited by first-year students.

In addition to posting on the blog, bloggers would attend a training session as well as a number of UBC events where bloggers could introduce themselves to other students and promote the blogs.

In total, the time commitment would be an average of two hours per week.

What will I get out of it?

You’ll be famous! The blogs will raise your profile on campus in two ways:

  • Online – on a number of different sites visited by first-years
  • In person – at exciting campus events

Besides that, you’ll be invited to participate in many of the great opportunities happening at UBC so that you can blog about your experiences. Things like

  • Student Leadership Conference
  • Terry Global Sealer Series
  • Conference for Learning and Academic Student Success

– so that you can blog about your experiences.

Being part of the first-year “Blog Squad” is a fantastic leadership opportunity, giving you the chance to meet a ton of new people and to have some fun!
