Employment: Faculty
Instructor, UBC Psychology Department, July 2009 to present
I am a tenure-track faculty member in the Learning Enhancement area in the Psychology Department who specializes in teaching. I teach the equivalent of three 3-credit courses each term, along with various other activities like facilitating Psychology TA training.
In 2012/2013 I’ll be teaching learners in four different courses. First up is Psych 100 (in the fall, the hardware side, including the basics of how the brain works, memory, and learning among other topics; then in the winter, the software side of things, including how we perceive ourselves and others, personality, psychological disorders and treament, among others). In the fall term, I also have two sections of Psych 217 (quantitative research methods). Although that might sound a little dull to you, I love this course! We work hard but have fun along the way.
Come January, I’ll be teaching learners in a course called Psych 208 (Section 2). Although 208 technically is entitled “Contemporary topics in social, clinical, personality, and developmental psychology” my section of this course focuses on applying social psychology to help learners become better students. We’ll cover topics like goal setting, self-control, motivation, and navigating group work productively, and get the chance to put that knowledge into practice with a team project. My title for that course is Psychology in your life: How social psychology can help you succeed. This course has been featured in UBC Reports, and my syllabus has been peer reviewed and published by the Office of Teaching Resources in Psychology.
Also in January I’ll be teaching graduate students in a small section of Psych 508 Teaching of Psychology. We will thoughtfully explore the practical elements involved in designing and teaching a course to students, while considering the research literature on teaching throughout.
Sessional Instructor, UBC Psychology Department, September 2008 to April 2009. I taught two sections of Psych 217 quantitative research methods.
Sessional Instructor, Kwantlen Polytechnic University Psychology Department, September 2007 to December 2007. I taught Social Psychology and Personality Psychology.
