Greetings from the CHBE Graduate Students Club,

We are pleased to announce that the Professional Development Seminar Series is back! Our first speaker of the year will be Dr. Vikram Yadav. He joined the department as an assistant professor last summer and will be talking about his journey in the academia.

The emphasis of the seminar will be on answering graduate students’ questions. So don’t be shy to bring your burning questions to the session!

Bullying and Harassment Training Sessions – WorkSafeBC Order

Dear members of UBC CHBE,

A notice from Marlene Chow, our Manager of Technical and Physical Resources.

To comply with BC’s Workers Compensation Act Policy Guidelines and UBC’s Respectful Environment policy, CHBE has scheduled bullying and harassment training sessions. All employees must complete the course either online or in person.
Important Note: All students that receive pay for work (TA, research etc) are considered employees and need to have this training. Individuals need only attend one training session or do the online training.
The training sessions are open to all CHBE faculty, staff and students including summer students. If you have taken the online version you are more than welcome to also attend the more in-depth comprehensive workshop.

CHBE GSC Professional Development Seminar – Mar 31 – Dr. Eric Jervis

Greetings from CHBE Graduate Students Club,

We are pleased to announce Dr. Eric Jervis as the speaker of the upcoming seminar in the professional development series. He is the Principal Scientist at Stemcell Technologies, leading the Bioengineering research group. Before moving to this industrial position, Dr. Jervis had been a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He is an alumnus of CHBE and a member of Industrial Advisory Committee of the department. A short biography of him is HERE.

We are pleased to announce Dr. Patrick Littlejohn as the speaker of the upcoming seminar in the professional development series. Dr. Littlejohn completed his BASc and MASc in UBC Material Engineering and earned his PhD at the University of Queensland, Australia, in Chemical Engineering in 2013. Patrick is currently the Senior Technology Development Specialist at BioteQ Environmental Technologies.

This seminar is on the importance of public speaking as an engineer. Learn how to choose a message that resonates with your audience and find out what you can do to develop your public speaking skills while you are a postgraduate at UBC.

Bring Lunch and Learn 6- Due Diligence

The department started the Bring Lunch & Learn (L&L) Series a few years ago. Since last September, with the addition staff support provided by Ms. Marlene Chow, our new Manager of Technical and Physical Resources, L&L has become a regular workshop during lunch time, where attendees bring their lunch and learn from the workshop. The workshop welcomes everyone in UBC that is interested.

The first lunch & Learn of the term is Next Monday, January 27th
From 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in ROOM 318.

CHBE GSC Professional Development Seminar – Jan 13 – Claudio Arato, FEC, P.Eng.

Greetings from Graduate Students Club,

We are pleased to announce Mr. Claudio Arato as the speaker of the upcoming seminar in the professional development series. He is the Director of Engineering at Sonoro Energy, leading research, development and technology commercialization efforts. He is also a Senior Engineer of S2GBioChem, a UBC-based cleantech startup company. Mr. Arato was elected as an Engineers Canada Fellow in 2011 and received Community Leadership Award from UBC Faculty of Applied Science in 2013. He has also been a member of Industrial Advisory Committee of CHBE department for over ten years. A short biography of him is HERE.

CHBE GSC Professional Development Speaker Series – Nov 27 – Dr. Shahab Sokhansanj

Hi everyone,

The Chemical and Biological Engineering Graduate Club is organizing a seminar series where the faculty members of our department share the stories of achieving their first faculty positions as well as making
important career decisions. These highly interactive seminars provide an excellent opportunity to hear instructing, exciting and valuable experiences of our faculty members and can prove very helpful in developing skills necessary for professional work environments in academia and industry.

We are pleased to announce Dr. Shahab Sokhansanj as the speaker of the upcoming seminar in the series. Dr. Sokhansanj P.Eng. is a distinguished research and development staff at Oak Ridge National laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He is also a Professor emeritus  University of Saskatchewan and adjunct Professor University of British Columbia. His expertise is in harvest and post harvest engineering of biomaterials. Dr. Sokhansanj  is a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Bioengineering and a Fellow of American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers, and Fellow of Engineers Canada.
