Project I led: YWCA Rooftop Garden: Building Cold Frames (To read my project plan, click here)
I led a team of nine Civil engineering students in a 3-day Reading Week project where they designed, built and planted in cold frames (mini-greenhouses) at the YWCA Rooftop gardens. For pictures, click here.
I learned that Leadership means… being flexible and open. It also means stepping aside and supporting your students to be leaders themselves and highlighlight their strengths!
Advice for future Project Leaders: I would highly recommend that if you are doing a project at the YWCA Rooftop Gardens or in the Downtown area, as a half-day activity, take the students on a walking tour of the Downtown Eastside. The UBC Learning Exchange has maps you can borrow. This is definitely a worth while tour and can really break down some of the negative stereotypes about the DTES.
