Hi, I’m your instructor librarian

My name is Dean Giustini and welcome to this offering of LIBR 559M – Social Media. This is an accelerated, asynchronous six week version of LIBR559M – Social media for information professionals from July 12th to August 20th. Everything you will need for 559M starts here in Vista. The course consists of six modules; but please read all introductory material thoroughly.

Here is a list of week I activities:

  1. Read “Getting Started” and introductory materials closely
  2. Create a blog using UBC blogs and let your peers know what name & theme you’ve chosen. Introduce yourself (and your blog) in the “Introductions” forum
  3. Find a study buddy. With your study buddy, select a term from course glossary to improve/update it. Post your edited version. (You will find your study groups later in Week II)
  4. Do discovery exercise –

  5. Work through Module I – Affordances. Begin to explore social media concepts – and, idea of affordance

It’s absolutely critical you keep up in this course and give yourself time every day to work through reading and exploration. There is a lot of busy work in social media! This work / activity should prompt ideas that you can share with your classmates via your blog, Twitter and any social media tool you deem useful to your participation in class.

I am looking forward to exploring and discussing social media with you. It’s a fast moving field with lots of tools. Part of the course is learning how to assess the tools and pay attention to what is important. Please let me know if you need help at any time.

Let’s get started…. Dean
