    Research and Instructional Support Update – Winter 2009

    Over the past month, the Lam Librarians have taught 18 classes, reaching over 1000 students:

    The David Lam Library is in the process of purchasing and hosting current and historical Canadian mutual fund data from Fundata, which will be available very soon. Notification will be sent out once the data becomes available.

    Trial Database – Public Affairs Index

    Public Affairs Index is a bibliographic database covering all aspects of national and global contemporary public policy issues ranging from public health, the environment, housing, human and civil rights, to international commerce and conflict. This database draws from a diverse array of scholarly journals, conference papers, trade publications and government documents to provide up-to-date information on a broad range of topics of concern to the world today.

    New Print on Demand Service for Springer eBooks

    The University of British Columbia Library and Springer are delighted to introduce a new Print on Demand feature linked to the Library’s eBook collection: MyCopy powered by SpringerLink.

    MyCopy allows current faculty members or registered students of the University of British Columbia to order a personal print copy of a Springer eBook included in the Library’s collection. The individual copy will be delivered as a printed soft cover version directly to you and it will be available for $24.95 (USD plus GST & PST, including shipping and handling costs).

    The University of British Columbia Library is one of the first libraries to introduce the MyCopy service that includes more than 11,000 eBooks out of a total of 30,000 eBooks available on SpringerLink.     Digital Media and Marketing Videos from eMarketer

    Are you looking for short digital media and marketing videos for teaching? eMarketer, a market research database available through the library, which is focused on Internet, e-business, online marketing, media and emerging technologies, includes several short videos on digital media and marketing topics, with new videos added to the database every week.

    Recent video topics include online holiday shopping, mobile TV, online consumer spending and behavioral targeting.

    New from Statistics Canada – Environmental Protection Expenditures by Business, 2006

    This report presents the results from the Survey of Environmental Protection Expenditures and highlights expenditures related to regulations, and environmental management processes and technologies used by Canadian businesses.

    New Mutual Fund Data in CRSP

    Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) users now have access to new mutual fund data.

    The CRSP Mutual Fund quarterly database contains historical information for over 30,361 (11,232 dead and 19,129 live funds) open-ended funds, including equity funds, taxable and municipal bond funds, international funds and money market funds.

    The data begin at varying times between 1962 and 2003 depending on availability and include:
    • History of each mutual fund’s name
    • Investment style
    • Fee structure
    • Holdings
    • Asset allocation
    • Monthly total returns
    • Monthly total net assets (TNA)
    • Monthly/daily net asset values
    • (DNAV/NAV)
    • Distributions
    • Dividends
    • Schedules of rear and front load fees
    • Asset class codes
    • Management company contact information
    • Identifying information: ICDI number
    Third party access is provided via the WRDS (Wharton Research Data Services) internet platform (for academic and government subscribers only).

    Doing Good: Business and the Sustainability Challenge is a report resulting from a global survey of senior executives as well as detailed interviews with selected CEOs and experts.

    Carbon Disclosure Project Global 500 Report

    This report, created by PricewaterhouseCoopers, for the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), analyzes the responses of the 500 largest companies in the FTSE to a questionnaire sent out to the world’s largest companies.

    From the Executive Summary:

    “This year CDP, backed by 385 leading institutional investors representing more than US$57 trillion of funds under management, has sent questionnaires to more than 3,000 of the world’s largest corporations requesting information on greenhouse gas emissions, the potential risks and opportunities climate change presents and strategies for managing those risks and opportunities.”

    New Database

    Professional Development Collection

    The Professional Development Collection database is “a highly specialized collection of electronic information especially for professional educators, professional librarians and education researchers…Professional Development Collection includes full text for Chronicle of Higher Education, Educational Leadership, Journal of Education, Journal of Higher Education, Journal of Learning Disabilities, Theory Into Practice, and nearly 520 high quality education journals. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.”

    New Electronic Book Collection

    myiLibrary is a new online book collection available through the Library, spanning all major academic disciplines, including a large number of commerce related books.

      Citation Management – RefWorks

      Business for Social Responsibility Report

      “Environmental, Social and Governance: Moving to Mainstream Investing?” is a report from Business for Social Responsibility, which comes out of a project at the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.

      From the Introduction to the report:

      “This report investigates the effectiveness of financial services companies at incorporating
      ESG criteria into mainstream investments. With regard to incorporating the ESG criteria,
      the report evaluates the challenges that have been faced and solutions that have been
      proposed industry-wide.”

      New Databases

      Association of Learned and Professional Society Publisher Learned Journals Collection (ALPSP).

      From the Library website:

      “The ALPSP Learned Journals Collection (ALJC) is a journal collection published by members of the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) through Swets. Founded in 1972, ALPSP is the international trade association for the not-for-profit publishers and represents more than 300 members in 31 countries worldwide. ALJC is a collection of 728 (in 2008) electronic journals from a range of learned and society publishers, covering Archaeology & History, Law, Life Sciences, Linguistics & Arts, Medicine, Religion & Philosophy, Science, Social Sciences, and Technology.”

      New Look for eMarketer Database

      The eMarketer database, which provides market research and trend analysis on Internet, e-business, online marketing, media and emerging technologies, has a new interface. Changes include a more flexible search options and the ability to set up e-mail alerts, to find out when new information appears in the database on your topic.

      “The Big Freeze” is an in depth report on the global credit crunch, from the Financial Times. Dated August 9, 2008 it looks back on the last year. The report, includes discussion on the beginnings of the credit crunch, banking, the economy, and recovery. It also includes an interactive map of areas affected.

      Venture Capital Database

      New Databases

      Uniworld Online

      Uniworld Online is a directory of multinational companies. It contains two searchable company directories:

      1) American Firms operating in Foreign Countries
      2) Foreign Firms operating in the United States.

      The database can be used to identify Canadian companies with U.S. subsidiaries, as well as U.S.companies with subsidiaries in Canada.

      Company information includes contact information for headquarters, branches, subsidiaries, and affiliates of multinational firms.

      Results can be limited to a particular industry or region and can be downloaded into Excel.

      Retailers Competing for Market Share: 2007 Retail Sales in Review

      Freedonia Focus

      A database of more than 250 industry market research reports, representing 18 industry sectors. Reports, which are created by the Freedonia Group, an international market research firm, include market share, market size, market segmentation and forecasts for a number of manufacturing industries.

      New Look for Business Source Complete

      EBSCOHost, the vendor of the Business Source Complete and Academic Source Complete databases, has released EBSCOHost 2.0, which has a new look and feel. All of the existing features remain, with some added flexibility for searching as well as sorting and viewing search results.

      2008 International Financial Reporting Standards Survey (Deloitte)

      New Electronic Books

      International Financial Reporting Standards Handbook

      The IFRS Handbook is now available online via the Library. From the library website:

      “Full text of accounting standards and interpretations adopted by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).Many of the standards forming part of IFRS are known by the older name of International Accounting Standards (IAS). On January 1, 2011, International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) will replace Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles for Publicly Accountable Enterprises (PAEs).”

      Irwin Law Books

      Access to many Irwin Law titles online, including the “Essentials of Canadian Law” series. These books provide a good overview of the law in a broad range of subject areas including criminal law, torts, contracts, environmental law, evidence, trusts and constitutional law.       Print Measurement Bureau – Update

      Print Measurement Bureau, a leading source of data on Canadian consumer product usage and lifestyles, will now release data twice a year, in March and September. Until now data has been released annually. PMB have also announced that “members will also have access twice each year to a Product and Brand database from the most recent year of PMB interviewing (sample size: 12,500).”
