Our objectives are to actively observe, analyze and compare how different communities manage their community gardens. We will be focusing on community gardens in the Downtown Eastside and Strathcona and comparing the two.

Our goals coincide with the Vancouver Food Strategy to improve access to healthy, local and affordable food for all citizens. Specifically, we plan to:

  • Interview community organizations regarding reasons for establishing gardens.
  • Interview garden members to ascertain motivations for accessing and utilizing gardens.
  • Determine member proximity to respective garden (i.e. within standard walkability from garden)
  • Summarize findings, including the accessibility of community gardens, and propose possible future research questions.

The community gardens we propose to contact are separate and private community organizations, and therefore there isn’t one umbrella community organization we can list as a partner in this project.
