Gitxaala

Apr 19th, 2009 by menzies

Gitxaala (pronounced Kitkatla) Nation is located on BC’s north coast.

Since 2001 the Forests and Oceans for the Future research group has been engaged is a series of collaborative research projects.  Since 2007, one of our research objectives involved the development of indicators to assist in sustainable forest management.  We focused on identifying aspects of the ‘traditional’ economy -harvesting, processing, cultural practices, etc- that indicates a healthy local culture.  Our underlying assumption is that well managed forests contribute to healthy local communities. Summaries of research can be found on our Forests and Oceans for the Future research page.

Video clips posted on the Forests and Oceans for the Future can be found here: community video web page.

Research methods and specific projects have included qualitative  community-based research, archaeology,  video production and walking across large swathes of Gitxaala’s coastal alpine.
