What about Academic Stuff?

We started a social thread…….will an academic thread be useful?

Please use this space to discuss any needs you might have academically.  Perhaps you’d like to suggest a type of workshop?  Maybe you have a tip for how to manage your supervisor?  Maybe you want to form a writng group or a ghematic group to share resources and ideas?   Maybe you have an idea for how to make yoru program better or a tip for writing?

(maybe you know how to reformat this screen so I can get to my typos and correct them???) *grin*

What have you got to say?

Ideas for Social Events

Many have said they’d like to see some social events

So, student council is organizing a Dim Sum Brunch on Oct 30 at 11:00.

See the Google calendar for more details.

What other social events would you like to see?

Use this thread to post your ideas for social activities, times, places etc.

In FACT, it would be GREAT if you volunteered to RUN SOMETHING through this thread, as Student Council won’t be able to follow up on all suggestions.

So, EDST, Let’s Get Sociable!

What priorities Should EDST student council have for this year?

Hello Colleagues.  Let’s use this thread to collect, share and debate ideas about what the priorities should be this year for our EDST student council.

I will start out by relating that last year two themes seemed to be developing last year.  At the PhD townhall meeting (although it was specifically directed at PhD students, many of the concerns are shared by students in Master’s programs), in various committees, and in discussions with students it seemed that the related themes of Community and Communication were common.  Perhaps these themes could be useful in helping us to frame our priorities?

One area of concern that was voiced often last year was quality and consistency in research supervision.  I wonder if we might like to discuss this in our priorities this year?

Let’s get some thoughts burbling!

Ideas for Student Retreat

Let’s use this thread to collect, share, and debate ideas for our EDST student retreat.  We should look at selecting a date in November.  So, we need to contemplate dates.

Typically our “retreat” is still here on campus as funds are short, but we should also think about venue.  Comments?

And finally, what should we do at our retreat?  Purely social and fun?  Mix of social and functional?  What kinds of activities would you like to do?  Should we take on some sort of group project:  for instance something identified by our priorities list or from a recommendation before the department (e.g. supervision standards?)

Share your ideas!

UPDATE: Oct 20: Student Council has scheduled the Retreat for
Saturday Jan 28, 2012. We are considering having the day a mix of social/fun
and “business.” In that business we are considering discussions
around what good supervision looks like and what specific measures students
would like to see implemented with respect to dept funding of students and transparency.
We are considering venues, activities, etc…..and welcome your input!
