Pitch refers to how high or low a sound is. Having the right pitch pattern in a word makes it sound natural; sometimes, changing the pitch pattern can even make a difference in the meaning of a word!

The pitch of individual words is mostly unpredictable, so learners of Japanese need to memorize pitch patterns of words every time they encounter new words.
