MET – ETEC 590 and Prerequisites
Jun 5th, 2007 by Dave Roy
Registration for 2007 Winter courses (Term 1: September 2007, Term 2: January 2008) has now opened for MET program students. Registration has been quite brisk, so thank you!
However, one bit of confusion that has arisen regards ETEC 590. ETEC 590 is a required course for BC teachers to move to Category Six on the TQS scale (it is open to any MET student who wishes to take it, however).
There are a few restrictions that students who may be interested in ETEC 590 should be aware of.1) ETEC 590 is only open to MET (not TBDL or TBLS) students. Non-MET students may not take it either.
2) You must email me to register for the course, as I must check to make sure you are eligible to take it. You cannot register in it yourself.
3) You must have taken at least 5 courses before you can register in ETEC 590. You cannot be taking your fifth course concurrently with ETEC 590. It is preferable that you take it even more toward the end of your program, but students may take it after their fifth course.
4) You must have already completed ETEC 500 before you can take ETEC 590. Again, you cannot take it concurrently. ETEC 500 provides a valuable introduction to ETEC 590 for those who plan on taking it. Thus, it must be taken first and it is best if the student’s research in this course is used as a foundation for the ETEC 590 research project.
Because of these restrictions (especially the ETEC 500 one), it is imperative that you plan your program in advance as much as possible. The course schedule goes through 2011, so you should be able to arrange your courses so that you can meet these restrictions with no problem.
ETEC 590 runs every other term specifically to make it as easy as possible to plan around. Many students take ETEC 500 as one of their first four courses (we don’t recommend it as your actual first course, though it is certainly possible to do so if you wish) and so they don’t have a problem with this. If you do decide to postpone taking ETEC 500, make sure it won’t inhibit the rest of your program schedule.
This ETEC 590 information can be found in two places on the MET web site: here and here.
As always, contact me if you have any questions.
6/6/07 Edit: Adjusted the wording of Point #4 above to make it clearer.
Hi Dave,
Did I hear you right in your blog when you said that you do not recommend that MET students take ETEC 500 in the first semester? Why is that?
One last question: What is the maximum number of courses you recommend taking in one semester for a full time teacher working in the Lower Mainland? Thanks
Thank you for your comment!
Basically, ETEC 500 is an intense, research-oriented course and some students have trouble with that as their first course. They feel a bit overwhelmed, so it’s generally better not to start with it.
On the other hand, we don’t restrict it that way and many others have had no problems (or at least they don’t report it to us). So it’s only a recommendation, not a requirement.
Most of our full-time working students take a maximum of two courses, though some only feel comfortable with one. I’d definitely say two is the max, though, unless you’re extremely efficient with your time.
Thank you again!
Dave
