MET – How does that $250 deposit work?
Jun 26th, 2007 by Dave Roy
One item of confusion for many MET program students has been the $250 deposit before course registration. This deposit is much like the $100 deposit that all undergraduate students pay before they can register. Because the MET program has course-based fees instead of program-fees (thus, you pay by the course instead of having three regular installments a year), we decided to follow the same format as undergraduate students.
So, here’s an FAQ about the deposit:
1) How often must I pay the deposit?
The deposit must be paid each session (Summer and Winter). Thus, if you are registering in Winter courses (Term 1: September; Term 2: January), you only pay the deposit once for those courses. The same applies to the Summer, except that MET courses are 13-week courses and thus go through both Summer terms.
2) Is the $250 deposit considered part of my tuition?
Yes, it is. The deposit is not in addition to your tuition.
Each MET course costs $1300.50. If you register in one course, then after registration you will owe $1050.50 ($1300.50 – $250).
If you register in two courses, then you will owe $2351 ($2601 – $250).
If you register in one September course and one January course, you will owe $1050.50 in September and $1300.50 in January).
3) I’m trying to register in my winter courses, but it still says I owe for the summer. Do I have to pay $500 ($250 for Summer and $250 for Winter)?
No. The Summer deposit only applies if you plan to register for Summer courses. The reason it is still showing on your account is because there are Term 2 courses that start in July. Until it is no longer possible to register in Summer courses, the deposit will show on your account. You can safely ignore it.
4) Is the deposit refundable?
No. And Yes. If you register in a course and then subsequently drop it, then the deposit is not refundable. It will disappear from your account.
However, if you pay it in expectation of registering in a course but then never do, the $250 will still be in your account and can be used for subsequent terms’ registration.
Thus, it is imperative that you know you’re going to stay in a course before you register in it if you want the money back. You can go ahead and pay the deposit and take your time deciding. Just keep in mind that if you decide to drop the course, that money is gone.
Of course, if you have any other questions that I can add to this post, let me know. If I get enough, I’ll make another post. Otherwise, I’ll just update here.
