Anybody who follows my personal blog knows that I’m a big fan of podcasts, subscribing to far more than I have time to listen to in any one week. It’s a delightful problem to have, actually, with so much audio goodness waiting for me to get a chance to listen to. I listen in my car on my way to and from work, and they are a nice companion on my daily commute. I was figuring they would be a nice distraction from being stuck in the horrible traffic caused by the Olympics, but then it turned out that traffic was actually better during the Olympics than it usually is. So much for that idea!
Anyway, one thing that constantly crosses my mind as I listen to a few of them (mainly the video game ones) is the idea that I would love to have a weekly podcast for the MET program, or more likely just EPLT in general. I listen to these podcasts, admiring the way they produce the show, with good information, announcements and special guest interviews along with the wonderful brand of humour that is always (to me, anyway) required in these kinds of podcasts. I imagine doing something like that for our office, but I always hit a couple of walls:
- The fear of getting so nervous having my voice and personality out there that nobody finds it the least bit interesting *or* entertaining. This is something that I could obviously get past and would probably go away with experience (you could see my performance in the MVR3 Vocational Rehabilitation online information session if it were available).
- Far worse, though, is the fact that I have no idea what kind of material that we could use that would make for both an interesting and informative podcast on a weekly basis. I could see maybe one, or two, but weekly?
That last one is the kicker. When we do something, we want it to be good from the beginning. Obviously, nothing’s perfect, but we want the quality to shine through even during the start-up problems that always occur. So if we’re going to do a weekly podcast, we don’t want it to go away after two or three episodes because we no longer have any content for it.
Let me be clear about something. This is my own idea/fantasy. There are currently no plans for us to do this. Nobody else in the office even knows about this idea (unless they stumble upon it, in which case “hi boss!”). Unless I can actually come up with an idea to present to the higher-ups, this will remain my “commuting fantasy” (this one’s better than a lot of others out there!).
That being said, if any kind-hearted readers decide that they want to offer their own ideas for stuff we could do, I might just have to consider those ideas and possibly include them in my own thought processes. If any good Samaritans happen upon this blog and decide, of their own free will, to offer up advice, I would be obligated to think about what they’re offering. That would be the right thing to do, wouldn’t it?
In the meantime, I’ll keep percolating ideas (which are better than coffee, anyway) and see if anything grabs me by the throat and says “I’m here!” And I’ll keep fantasizing as I listen to the next Official Xbox Magazine podcast that I’m enjoying, thinking “wouldn’t it be cool if that were me?”
Thanks for this post Dave. You are giving me some ideas for my Wiki Assignment on Podcasts.
