Down the Hall – Ep 18 – If I Had a Hammer
Sep 9th, 2011 by Dave Roy
This week, we talk shop. Shop class, that is, and how vocational training in Education is falling by the wayside. Many kids today don’t have any “hands-on” skills with tools and basic home maintenance, much less more sophisticated trades skills. We look at how both parents and teachers can help get children more involved in hands-on activities that will also give them skills for their adult life as well.
All of that, and you’ll hear about the pop can lamp.
Also, Dave interviews Natasha Boskic, Manger of Educational Technology here at EPLT. Natasha talks about her PhD dissertation on literacy and ethical issues in Alternative Reality Games (ARGs), and how these games can help promote literacy practices, as well as enriching a person’s ethical growth. It’s a fascinating study that will continue as ARGs are incorporated into some of EPLT’s courses.
Unfortunately, we recorded before today’s earthquake, so there is no mention of any ground rumbling. Not that we felt it out here anyway.
