EPLT is proud to announce a unique new graduate program being offered on campus here at UBC, and is offered by the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy.

The Master of Museum Education focuses on teaching and learning outside of the classroom, bringing together museum educators, community educators, and teachers.

From the program web site:

This program will provide the necessary skills and knowledge for careers as educators in informal settings such as museums, locally and globally, and to support classroom-based teachers in expanding their use of the community as a learning site. The program model is one that recognizes the need for contextualizing museum education curriculum in both home country context (which has its own unique social and political context) and in the Canadian cultural context of museum education, in which practices may be conceptualized in other beneficial ways to that of the student’s own country of origin. The end result are graduating students that are then better able to influence the systems in their own countries with strengthened capacities to introduce beneficial reforms around museum education.

This program will be offered on the UBC campus, so you will need to travel to campus for your courses.

Here are the details of the program:

Location: UBC Campus

Start Date: September 2012

Application Deadline: March 1, 2012

An information session for this program has been scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, from 4:00 – 5:00 pm. It will be held at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, 1100 Chestnut St., Vancouver, BC. If you can’t be there, you can also join us online.

EPLT is proud to announce a new M.Ed cohort in Modern Language Education, with a focus on French Immersion and Core French.

The program takes place in Vancouver, with three weeks over two Summers in Montreal, in association with the Language & Literacy Education department.

Each course in the program can be taken in Vancouver or via web-conferencing, so you don’t have to be in the BC’s Lower Mainland in order to take this program.

Since this is a French Immersion program, it is required that students be very comfortable with both written and spoken French.

Known as FRM3, this is the third iteration of this highly successful cohort.

From the web page:

Action research on learning a second language or on a theme related to French as a second language forms the core of this program. As a result, the program will include courses in research methods as well as courses related to bilingualism and the acquisition and teaching of a second language. In addition, students will investigate a specific topic relevant to their own classrooms.

There is also a French language version of the web site here.

The thoughtful practice of educational leadership in a context of school district change involves engaging with multiple constituencies – school and community-based. Constituencies hold conflicting social, political and cultural claims regarding the aims of education in a democratic and pluralist society.

EPLT is proud to announce a new M.Ed cohort in Technology Education, focusing on Digital Learning and Curriculum. It takes place in Vancouver and Richmond. The cohort is called DLC2, and is the second iteration of this very successful cohort.

From the web site:

One of the most active topics of research at the moment, Digital Learning and Curriculum (DLC) is spurred by the recent realization that, when it comes to technology, disciplinary (or content) knowledge of effective teachers is more a matter of understanding deep associations among familiar concepts than it is about taking more advanced courses in technology.

In a sense, this Master’s program is focused on developing better understandings of what teachers already know – seeking to enhance teachers’ knowledge of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) not by studying more about computer hardware or software individually, but by unpacking concepts collaboratively (e.g., identifying and elaborating metaphors, analogies, applications, exemplars, gestures, and other experiences that contribute to the ‘life’ of an idea).

DLC is thus designed for those teachers who are seeking to enhance professional practice by developing their educational technology knowledge through collaborative study.

Here are the details for this program:

Start Date: July 2012

Program Length: 2 Years

Application Deadline: January 15, 2012

This program is offered by the Department of Curriculum & Pedagogy.

Information Sessions are being scheduled for the Fall, beginning September, and will appear on the DLC2 page on the EPLT web site when finalized.

EPLT is now accepting applications for a number of our M.Ed cohorts that are beginning in 2012. Since one of them is an online cohort (Early Childhood Education), thus potentially reaching an international audience, Jenny and I thought that this would be a perfect time to give you all advice on just what is required to apply to one of our cohorts.

Not to mention the fact that Jenny and I haven’t done a episode of Down the Hall in a month, due to vacation (another episode is coming next week, though).

We didn’t want you to get lonely!

In the meantime, Yvette Kharoubeh (Another senior program assistant here at EPLT) and Jenny recorded this nifty podcast to walk you through the often-confusing procedures for applying to our cohorts.

Please see our Graduate Cohort page for information on the cohorts that are being offered. And keep checking back, as there will be more.

Just click on the link below to go to our podcast page where you can either listen to it on the page or you can download it. Or, you can play it in the handy web player just below the link.

EPLT is proud to announce a new M.Ed cohort in Physical Education, taking place in Vancouver. The cohort is called TGU2, “Teaching Games for Understanding.” This is the second iteration of this cohort.

From the web site:

Teachers who use this approach see their students as active participants (mentally, physical, emotional) in the process of learning games. As we all know, students and adults alike learn in a variety of ways and progress at different rates. Knowing that students are always at different stages of understanding, teachers can use the TGfU model to focus in on individual, social and contextual processes.

Students learn about the games presented through a series of modified games. These games are designed to highlight tactical problems – situations that engage students and help them develop the skills they need at that time. Students do practice skills, but in the context of a game rather than separate from it. As they play, they consider what they might best do, before they are taught how best to do it.
