Doug’s Introduction

Playing Thunderbird bass

Hi Everyone

As you might speculate…my passion is playing music…particularly rock music. Music is a big part of my personal life. I also play drums and guitar and hope to be a “Lenny Kravitz-like” musician some day…i.e. play all the instruments in a recording.

I’m happily married for 21 years and live on a farm by Highridge Alberta. My wife and I run a part-time horse stable business. Our “real” job is teachers at The Alberta Distance Learning Centre (

For the past 15+ years I’ve taught in a distributed learning environment, starting at the Saskatchewan Government Correspondence School (  then migrating to ADLC about 6 years ago. Within the 6 years in Alberta, I’ve taken two leaves of absences from teaching and have managed course development at The Open School BC, in Victoria BC. (

In 2004 I earned a MEd from the University of Saskatchewan, in the Educational Technology program. With the years of DL teaching and KSA’s from the MEd in ETEC, I’m very stoked about this course. An entrepreneur approach to DL has been mulling around in my head for a few years so hoping I can come out of this course with a solid business plan.

Welcome Doug.

You’ll have some minor catching up to do, but jump in where you see an opening. Glad to have you on this trek.

Hi Doug,

I too play drums, just got back into it after many years and am having a blast. Vintage Ludwigs. I bought them from a guy who was a total John Bonham freak. He tells me they are duplicates in diameter and length of those JH played. At any rate, they are fun. We jam at our school regularly.

You’ll like this one, I just traded my 63 Valiant for a mint condition Fender Strat “American deluxe” and a Fender Super Sonic Amp (tube style, 2 piece) I don’t play guitar but plan to learn after I finish my MET. (A treat to myself) My kids have expressed an interest but only after a couple more years of piano .

welcome aboard, Dave

I find it amazing that you found someone with a Fender Strat who would trade for a 63 Valiant.

Its good to have some musicians in the group. There are some really good online guitar courses out there if you need one. is my favorite place to go for finding strange chords (although now that I have a mac there is a widget 🙂

Hey Doug,

The part-time horse stable business has caught my eye. I love horses and am a keen rider. Sadly Vancouver isn’t all that conducive to having a horse in your back yard. At least until I win the lottery ;). But I do lease a spunky Trakehner and ride once or twice a week.

Your ‘real’ job sounds pretty interesting too. I look forward to your insights and to working with you in the course.
