Not only was this beautiful in its simplicity, but it really captured the essence of how one's thoughts can wander in a virtual environment, yet still maintain focus, and continually learning. I loved it!

Thanks!

It turns out that another bit of technology I used was the program Insight on our school computers. By watching their progress through the screens, I was able to throw a positive message when someone tried using a hyperlink directly to them, to remind students to try out the hyperlinks and to think about them, and was able to keep kids from wandering too far from the assigned task. With Insight too, I also threw out a quick poll: "How many people liked this assignment?" Even knowing it was anonymous, the percentage of "yesses" was 76!

I certainly agree with this statement
“I also strongly believe that we must not give ourselves wholly to the new. We must also make room for three R’s – Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. For the students to be able to fully participate in their community they must be well grounded in the basics of reading and writing. I am not sure if we can skip the basics but I am sure we can teach concurrently with teaching them to navigate the superhighway of the new technologies.”
Yes we cannot omit the basics. I believe that to be fair to the New London Group and Dobson and Willinsky we have to assess the audience for which the articles is written. For people like me these articles were really fascinating and motivated me to view literacy in a new light. They provided a springboard for me even though I agree that perhaps they could now write subsequent articles to really show more practical examples of how we can really encourage digital literacy among our students. I believe that they take it for granted that the prerequisites would have been established with the aid of learning softwares like Reader Rabbit , Hooked on Phonics and Starfall.com. I think that they want us to see digital literacy as an extension of basic literacy. These articles may not have been impressive to persons who are more knowledgable of the field.
However I want to be a part of your club. I have some real independent thinkers that I have created through a last minute blog I just set up. The process will continue as this is one of my first online courses.
Happy Holidays!

Hi Louise: I, like you, found Bolter much easier to read- as a result I think I got more out of this text. It was a pleasure to read it.

Just wanted to comment on the fact that you've never researched in a library. I did my undergrad work at UBC- way back in the day. I loved going to the library and researching- Sometimes it was like detective work- tracking down some real old documents- going through old newspapers on microfiche. It was dark and old and had a certain smell. If you ever have the opportunity to do some library research take it- just for the experience!

Hi Natalie, we greatly appreciate your thoughtful comments. After your comment about the transcript, I wondered if we should have included that as well for another alternative method of accessing the podcast. It amazes me how text keeps coming back into the picture even with an orally based product such as a podcast. The software that we used with this podcast (Audacity and GarageBand) really helped with the development of the final product - we were quite pleased with the final product - glad that you enjoyed it too! Cheers, Michael
