this is a beautiful poem, and reflects so eloquently what I have been struggling with to express to others about my own critical reflections of my development work.

thank you.

Interesting post Konrad. I think being a humble traveler can go a long way towards breaking down our distorted views, but of course we must remember how privileged one has to be to be able to travel. Perhaps we also take 'Orientalist' views of people in our own neighborhoods, like our indigenous population, and we don't have to go very far to break down some walls of difference.

Thanks for the beautiful write up Lana, and for the equally inspiring art work at the EIESL gala. Difference is what makes this world amazing, but we must relate to everyone with our sameness in order to reconnect and redefine our broken community.

I wonder if these band-aid fixes are a recent artifact of the fast food generation that wants quick fixes for everything, or whether it has been a common practice of traditional human civilizations to address the immediate needs and not pay heed to deeper socioeconomic issues that are the root of the problem...

Great thoughts! According to Wikipedia, Islam is the world's second largest religion and practised by ~23% of the world population. If indeed all Muslims were terrorists as some North American media sources would want us to believe, Earth would be one messed up planet! I agree that it is our humanity that binds us together. I think that it is only by critically examining our beliefs and respecting those of others can we breakdown the barrier of the "other"

I still have doubts about short-term placements outside of emergency response situations (Although I've been on a short-term placement my self). Who is benefiting from the exchange? Can we justify the trip as simply an educational tool? If so, is the the community we are interacting with aware of this fact? I still don't have answers to these questions and perhaps attempting to find a general rule is a the wrong approach.
