December’s Health Heroes: The Helpers

Lynn Newman

“The opposite of morality is indifference.” Maxine Greene

I recently had the privilege of drinking coffee with Lynn Newman, Chair of the UBC United Way Steering Committee. Other folks at UBC will know her as the Assistant Dean of Land and Food Systems.  Lynn’s dedication to UBC and the wider community is inspiring.  Although she is currently working on her PhD and working a full-time job, Lynn has also volunteered as co-chair of the United Way Steering Committee for the past two years.  She has been involved with the United Way for years, including having chaired the private sector United Way campaign.

Lynn, and other UBC folks who dedicate themselves to bettering their community by volunteering,   are an inspiration to start giving more of yourself to your community.  Giving a little bit of your time can amount to a big difference for many others. Lynn puts her work with UBC’s United Way Campaign last year into perspective: “We helped more people than you can fit in GM Place.”

She also volunteers to coordinate the UBC Golf Classic, which raises money for the Walter Gage Fund.  She finds it inspiring to see the list of non-curricular activities that this charity funds for students, from conferences to Model UN.

While she says that her fear of balloons and public speaking has been put to the test by her volunteer work with the United Way, she acknowledges that she has gained much from her volunteerism:  from that “warm, fuzzy feeling” to new friends all across campus, at all different levels.  She admits, however, that she has to work hard to ensure her life is not always work, so on her weekends she plays field hockey, hikes and hits the gym.

The holiday season is a good time to remind ourselves and our families about those who have less than us.  For this month, we wanted to highlight those who give so much of themselves, to celebrate the heroes on this campus who better the lives of others in so many ways.  So here’s to Lynn and the many UBC community members who volunteer; may their gifts give more than they can even fathom.

All my best,

Suzanne

It is great to see Lynn, and all the volunteers at UBC, get some well-earned recognition. Thank you for all that you do!
