1. Visitors with their own laptops will have access to a special, trial network for the duration of the games:

UBC Wireless Trial Service – ubcvisitor

From:      12:00 Monday, 8 February 2010
To:        00:01 Monday, 22 March 2010

Reason:    Trial Guest services on the UBC Wireless network for the Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Effects:   A trial ‘ubcvisitor’ wireless network is operating for the duration of the Winter Games. This allows campus Visitors to connect to the Internet for light web browsing. Service restrictions are in place such as limited bandwidth and limited accessible network ports.

Further description of the service is available at http://www.it.ubc.ca/internet/wireless.html, or try it out from here.

Faculty, staff, and students are to continue using the ‘ubcsecure’ wireless network for full services and functionality.

Contact:   Help Desk support is not available with this service.
Visit www.it.ubc.ca or call 604-822-4115 for service bulletins and system alerts.

2. Visitors traveling without laptops will be able, as usual, to get temporary passes from Koerner Borrower Services to use computers in the library.  Staff upstairs are gearing up for a possible rush.

Hi all,
Some of you may have tried the call transfer procedures provided in the Phone Voice Mail Procedure handout. It seems that this procedure (which I inherited from my GAA days) does not seem to work on the current phones at the Reference Desk. Thus, the new procedure for transferring live calls and voice mail messages: Give the patron the appropriate number to call.
Thank you and apologies for any confusion.
Best,
Tara

Hallo,
Ellen was showing me how to answer emails today, and two of them were about off-campus access. We’ve just created a new folder for filing email questions that involve connecting from home – VPN/proxy stuff.
After much negotiation, brainstorming, and arm-wrestling, we decide to call the folder ‘Connecting from home’.
Cheers,
Francesca

Hi all,
Here is a copy of the HSS Phone Voice Mail Guidelines Download file
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

From David Winter:
In order to improve security on the library’s system, the following measures are being taken:
1. New UBCcards and community cards
7 days after a new UBCcard or community card is issued and if the pin
number is still the default pin, an email asking the user to change the
pin number for security reasons. If, after 14 days, the pin number
remains the default, we will change the pin number and send the user an
email with the new pin number.
Note – New cards will still have the default pin. This process is to get
the users to change their default pin.
2. Old Library Records with Default PINs
There are approximately 47,000 active cards still using the default pin
number. Starting on Monday, we will be changing the pin numbers and
sending the users an email with the new pin numbers.
3. Forgot Your PIN? page
On Monday, users can have a new pin number sent via email.
The user will enter their library barcode and email address into a form.
If the email address matches the email address in the Voyager patron
record, a new pin number will be sent to the user.
Links to the form will by located on the My Account page, Contact the
Library and wherever we prompt for a library barcode and pin.
If users are having problems with their pin numbers, please direct them
to the Forgot Your PIN? page. If they are still having problems with
their pin numbers, they can go to the nearest branch library or phone

Hi all,
This was meant to be posted last week but for some reason didn’t show up on the blog. Given that there was another security incident last night, I thought I would try to post it again.
————————————————————————————————————————————–
There was a small incident last Friday where I had to call Campus Security to deal with a person with mental health issues who was being a bit disruptive. A refresher on safety training will take place in the near future, but the incident has prompted me to post a brief reminder to the blog, particularly for the GAAs who work alone in the evenings, regarding important numbers and tips. Please do not hesitate to make any comments or corrections.
1. Steve Peets (604) 680-9309 is often in the library to deal with security issues.
2. If Steve Peets is unavailable, call UBC Patrol/Campus Security at 2-2222 who will notify any security officer in the building or the vicinity. Alternatively you may call 911.
3. Safewalk: If you are leaving the building at night and do not feel comfortable walking alone, please call AMS Safewalk at 604-822-5355 or the Direct Line Phone on the 3rd floor of Koerner Library by the elevator. For more information, please visit http://www.ams.ubc.ca/safewalk
If, for any reason, you are on the desk and feel unsafe, do not hesitate to leave the desk and come into the office.
For additional Safety Tips, please consult the yellow handout in the blotter on the Reference Desk or the red folder labeled “Emergency Procedures”, which is located on the first shelf on the desk with the room bookings sheets, to the left of the locked cupboard.

I had a question from one of the GAAs recently about the procedure for alerting someone of an error in the catalogue and I thought I would post this for the benefit of the other GAAs. If you notice an error in a catalogue record, you can email Susan Andrews (susan.andrews@ubc.ca) or forward it to one of the librarians if you are unsure as to how you should proceed. Thank you for your keen attention to these records!

LPC Storage Requests are now made through the IKBLC Circulation Desk. (I believe it takes up to three business days for requests to be processed.)

Leonora’s email about upcoming changes in DocDel policy:
Starting Sep. 4, we’ll be changing our document delivery pricing model so that campus-to-campus delivery becomes free, for both books and articles, for our core users.
This is a change from the current model where branch-to-branch book document deliveries are free on the Point Grey campus. The current model (offered as a pilot) is no longer sustainable due to significant and growing workload involved. We’ve also had continuing requests from users at Robson Square and the hospitals for free article delivery from Point Grey. We’re eliminating the non-pickup fee as part of this change.
A link alerting users to the new policy will go onto the doc del order page next week.
See: http://www.library.ubc.ca/rss/docdel/fee_policies.html (page still under revision)
As always if you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact
me, David Winter, Liz Whittam or Katherine Hill.

From Leonora Crema:
Hello everyone,
Just letting you know about a few policy changes that are happening for community borrowers starting August 1st:
– prices for community cards will increase
– new limit of 50 items that can be borrowed at one time
– BC college students and staff will become eligible for free UBC community cards (5-item limit). This is a result of UBC’s joining the BC Council of Post-Secondary Library Directors reciprocal borrorwing agreement. UBC students will also be able to borrow at most post-secondary libraries in BC.
If you have any questions, please contact me or Jocelyn Byfield.
Thanks,
Leonora
