The UBC IRSA External Model United Nations (MUN) Team is the official MUN team of UBC. We are now accepting applications for delegate positions from all UBC students.
The University of British Columbia will be sending multiple delegations to multiple Model United Nations conferences in the coming year. The UBC delegation is looking for dedicated, enthusiastic, energetic, and committed delegates to join the team.
Most MUNs attended by UBC are the most highly competitive university-level UN simulations in the World. These conferences present students with exciting opportunities to engage with international issues, hone debate skills, and to further their understanding of the workings of the United Nations.
Applications are open to all UBC students interested in this unique opportunity, but previous experience in Model United Nations simulations will be a strong asset.
In the months leading up to their respective conferences, the teams will meet on a weekly basis to research their states’ role and policies, as well as general MUN rules and procedural training. Preparation for the simulation will also include fundraising activities to cover partial costs for the conference.
The costs of the conferences are ultimately the responsibility of each student on the team, but fortunately, in the past two years, an average of 70% of the costs has been covered by funding and fundraisers. This is not a promise, but the team has had good luck with funding in the past and our continuing excellence at MUN conferences will keep this tradition going.
The conferences that UBC will attend this year are National Model United Nations in New York, Harvard National MUN in Boston, Model NATO in Washington DC, Northwest MUN in Seattle, and WorldMUN in Melbourne*. Applicant preferences are taken greatly into consideration and the utmost effort will be taken to put successful applicants in their preferred teams.
*Because of the high cost of attending WorldMUN in Melbourne, there will be minimal funding for the conference. The only funding will be those raised by the team through fundraisers.
Interested applicants should send a resume and a one-paragraph statement of interest to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject heading ‘MUN Applications’. Make sure it says exactly ‘MUN Applications’ or the email will not go to the correct folder and will not be answered. Applications are due October 17, 2012. Our goal this year is to allow every applicant to participate in MUN and give them the training and experience to apply to the top teams again next year.
On behalf of HNMUN Head Delegate, Sabina Kravcakova, MNATO Head Delegate, Fatima Hewaidi, and the rest of the UBC IRSA MUN team, I look forward to your applications and meeting you.
