LIBR 596: West Vancouver Memorial Library

Students interested in this project should contact Melissa,, and cite project # 2016-07. Please include a resume, cover letter (optional)

Purpose of project:

West Vancouver Memorial Library has received a gift of approximately 2000 scores and parts from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). We wish to add this to our existing Orchestra Collection, a collection of orchestral music largely made up of music acquired from the CBC in 2010. As with the existing collection, we wish to make this additional printed music discoverable through our catalogue, and available to be borrowed by orchestras and individual musicians.

Summary of activities:

1.Develop a plan to merge the new additions into the existing collection. This would involve appraising the music to determine if it should replace existing copies, be added or discarded.
2. Create a procedure for cataloging and processing the music based on current practices for the Orchestra Collection.
3. Create catalogue records for as many of the pieces as time allows.

Expectations of the end result of the project:

We recognize it won’t be possible for the student to complete the cataloguing of the collection in the 120 hours allotted for the project. However, they should be able to leave us with a workflow plan and estimated timeline for completion as well complete some of the catalogue records.

Time periods in which the project could be supervised (check all that apply):
  • Summer Session, Term 1 (May – June)
  • Winter Term 1 (September – December)
 Is there a project Deadline?

Considering the Project requirements, please suggest coursework:

LIBR 511 Cataloguing and classification.

It is essential that the student have a formal music background. At the very least, they should be familiar with the conventions of printed orchestral music.
