About University Canada West:
UCW is small, for-profit institution, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees (Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts in Business Communication and Master of Business Administration), both online and on campus. The University is currently growing, as it is increasing intakes from both international and domestic markets, and looking to establish additional Master-level degrees – with a primary focus on business. The academic year has four intakes: in January, April, July and October (each term is 12 weeks in length).
About UCW Library:
The library reflects the focus of the University: we have a small print collection and a sizeable – and growing – electronic collection, with a particular focus on resources for contemporary business. The Library reviews current databases and other library resources and considers new and additional resources on an ongoing basis and we acquire resources both through direct negotiation with the vendors, as well through consortia agreements (such as BC ELN).
About the role:
The primary duties of the successful candidate(s) will be to:
-Provide prompt and thorough in-person and virtual reference services to all the library patrons
-Manage the circulation tasks: checking in/out materials, handling holds/fines, etc.
-Work with the librarian on various other library projects
-Develop a sound understanding of all aspects of a small academic library (collection development, instruction, technical services, electronic resources management) – according to own interest
-Salary will be $25/hour
-The initial schedule for this posting will be for 11 weeks each term (in the weeks 1-11 of term), from 4PM to 8PM; additional hours will be available.
o Able to commit to the posted schedule
o MLIS from an ALA accredited institution (or equivalent) required
o Past experience working with international students
o Good understanding and proven experience in delivering reference services in a library setting (business or academic library is a plus)
o Outstanding oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are imperative
o A good track record of learning and mastering new electronic resources
o Some experience in web page creation/maintenance
o A strong commitment to public service
o Flexibility and willingness to assume different assignments
o Warm and calm demeanor
