POSITION OVERVIEW
The City of Richmond is offering a unique opportunity for a dynamic and innovative individual to lead the Richmond Archives as Archivist. The Archivist will be instrumental in preserving and making accessible the evidence of Richmond’s past. This is a specialized and professional position directing a municipal archives program and working collaboratively within the City Clerk’s Office and specifically with the corporate records management program team. The Archivist will demonstrate commitment to the provision of high quality archives, records and information management services. The incumbent will be encouraged to bring forward new ideas and suggest improvements to existing practices. Considerable independence of judgment and action is exercised with policy matters being discussed with a superior who reviews work performance in terms of effective services rendered.
Examples of key activities include, but are not limited to:

 Developing and, upon approval, implementing policies and procedures relative to the organization and development of the municipal archives program;
 Recommending policies and procedures for the life-cycle management of records including, but not limited to, the security, evaluation, retention, and disposal of municipal records including those in digital form;
 Planning, assigning, supervising and participating in the work of one or more staff or consultants engaged in related archival tasks;
 Supervising and coordinating volunteers and students;
 Coordinating the work plan and communicating with the non-profit society Friends of the Richmond Archives;
 Acquiring, classifying, and administering a variety of historical records in various media; and
 Providing assistance and archival information to a variety of internal and external contacts.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s Degree in Archival or Information Studies required, plus 2 years related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
