The Assistant Curator of Manuscripts acquires archival materials for the Louisiana & Lower Mississippi Valley Collection and other archival materials as appropriate through donation or purchase; collaborates with others to prioritize processing, accomplish digitization, & set collection policies; provides regularly scheduled reference service; promotes use of & provides support and instruction in use of collections; in consultation with Associate Dean for Special Collections manages acquisitions budgets & externally acquired funds; prepares and manages grants; participates in overall management of Special Collections.
•50% Conducts collection development, acquisitions & donor relations for the archival materials of the LLLMVC; appraises collections for research value; provides curatorial oversight & management of these collections (analog and digital); documents essential management information about the provenance & transfer of ownership to the LSU Libraries of donations & purchases; collaborates with other staff to to identify candidates for digitization; administers LLMVC collection development policy with Associate Dean of Special Collections and Assistant Curator of Books.
•20% Provides regularly scheduled public service in Special Collections; develops instructional materials including subject guides; provides instruction and outreach to classes and the general public; as appropriate, assists with the preparation of exhibitions based on Special Collections materials.
•15% Participates in the overall management of Special Collections, including setting policies and procedures; strategic planning; development activities; preparation of reports, statistics, grant applications, publicity, etc; and other duties as assigned.
•15% Works to meet tenure and promotion requirements.
•Masters in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library school or other relevant masters degree.
•3 years experience in an archives or special collections setting
•Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory & practice, national & international standards, & best practices for appraisal, acquisition, preservation, processing, and provision of access to archival materials; excellent communication & interpersonal skills; demonstrated organizational, planning, project (see below*)
•Demonstrated knowledge of & experience acquiring, managing, or processing congressional or born-digital collections; demonstrated experience conducting donor relations; knowledge of Louisiana and American history (particularly the American South) and related disciplines and research methodologies; (see below^)
Special or Physical Qualifications
•Ability and willingness to lift 30 pounds. Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be able to travel independently.
•*(cont’d required) management; familiarity with online and print research materials and methodologies; knowledge of relevant emerging technologies.
•^ (cont’d preferred) experience providing reference service in an archives or special collections setting; knowledge of archival management systems; reading competency in French and/or Spanish.
