Reporting to the Head of Manuscripts Processing, the Manuscripts Processing Archivist arranges and describes archival material that is a part of the Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections. The incumbent assists in the implementation of EAD and archival management software and participates in projects to revise, edit, correct, and digitally publish legacy finding aids. He or she provides public services at Special Collections service points and participates in outreach efforts, digitization projects, exhibition preparation as appropriate, and other duties as assigned.
50%: Performs preliminary and full processing of manuscript collections; researches historical and biographical information relevant to the collection; creates finding aids and MARC cataloging records utilizing knowledge of standards including Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), EAD, MARC, LCSH, LNAF, and other appropriate thesauri & authority lists used for indexing archival descriptions. Identifies and carries out rehousing and preservation treatments as needed.
35%: Assists in the implementation of EAD and archival management software; encode EAD finding aids using oXygen XML editor; participates in projects to revise, edit, correct, and digitally publish legacy finding aids.
15%: Performs advanced-level reference work to assist researchers in identifying and using Special Collections and other library materials. Interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections. As appropriate, collaborates with the Exhibitions Coordinator to mount exhibitions that highlight Special Collections’ holdings and with the Head of Digital Services to publish manuscripts in the digital library, and participates in in-person and online outreach efforts. Contributes to social media tools to raise public awareness of newly processed collections.
Successful candidates will have knowledge of archival theory, practice, standards, and best practices; experience creating EAD finding aids; awareness of information technologies appropriate to archives; willingness and ability to research and apply new technologies; strong commitment to technical services in support of public services.
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program with a concentration in archival studies or management OR relevant masters and archives certification. (work experience may substitute for concentration and certification)
Minimum of 1 year, full-time experience arranging and describing archival collections.
Experience providing reference service in an archives, special collections, or academic setting, and practically applying MPLP; reading knowledge of French or Spanish. Knowledge of open-source archives management software; Louisiana, southern U.S., and American history; and preservation techniques.
Able to work in a dusty environment and to lift and move 40 pound boxes.
