The Columbia University Libraries invites nominations and applications for the position of Head of Archives Processing. The Head of Archives Processing leads CUL’s archival processing team, provides oversight of grant funded projects and serves as the resident expert on archival metadata and descriptive standards.
The new Head will help to ensure that new and legacy archival collections are discoverable by researchers as part of a larger strategic decision to address backlogs and “hiddenness” among the collections across the entire library system.
Reporting to the Director of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Head supervises a team of 8 archivists and is responsible for:
– Leadership, supervision and training: Coordinates, prioritizes and supervises the work of the archival processing team. Sets benchmarks for productivity, ensures that archivists are trained in local and national best practices, and functions as a liaison to other CUL divisions, including the other distinctive collections (Avery, Starr, and Burke).
– Technical Services: Provides leadership for all archival technical services projects across CUL. Collaborates on the development of tools and workflows for the description of analog, digitized and born-digital archival resources in accordance with national and international standards. Encodes finding aids into EAD and publishes them online, catalogs collections using Voyager in accordance with appropriate bibliographic standards (MARC, RDA, etc.). Leads the effort to reprocess and bring legacy finding aids up to current descriptive standards and to remediate incoming and existing metadata. Creates, revises, and maintains documentation of the Libraries’ archival practices.
– Processing: Arranges and describes manuscript material and archival collections in all formats (paper, photographic, electronic, audiovisual, etc.). Develops processing plans for collections, including determining level of granularity at which to process, assuring appropriate housing of materials, identifying and recommending materials for conservation treatment, and writing and editing finding aids.
– Professional Engagement: Participates in unit and library wide planning and activities. Represents CUL in national organizations and initiatives.
– Grants: Contributes to writing grant applications as appropriate and to the writing of reports.
Three or more years processing experience preferably in all formats.
-Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice; comprehensive knowledge of descriptive standards for archival and manuscript materials, especially DACS and EAD, and familiarity with other relevant standards, such as DublinCore, EAC, MODS, METS, MARC, AACR2, RDA, LCNAF, and LCSH; familiarity with technologies and systems developed or adopted by the archival community for the management of and access to archives including born-digital materials.
