Assistant Chief Librarian – Powell River Public Library

Setting: Powell River is located on British Columbia’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. PRPL serves the 20,000 residents of the City of Powell River, the Powell River Regional District and the Tla’amin Nation.

Description: The Assistant Chief Librarian is a full-time, exempt management position responsible for creating dynamic collections and overseeing the delivery of programming that develops literacy skills, inspires creativity and encourages life-long learning. This position is also active in the community and works to create meaningful connections to the library. Internally, the successful candidate will also play a key role in policy decisions and planning.

Reporting to: Chief Librarian

To start: January 22, 2018

Required Qualifications:
A master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution;
Two years relevant library experience;
Experience in a management or supervisory role;
The ability to lead, support and direct staff;
Knowledge of current trends and best practices in collection development and library services;
A high level of flexibility, self-motivation and ingenuity;
The ability to manage a variety of projects at once;
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff and external partners;
Knowledge of computer software and hardware applicable to the job (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Adobe, WordPress, SD Symphony);
Enthusiasm, sense of humour, ability to work well with colleagues and the public and strong service ethic;
A clear criminal record check and proof of job credentials required.

Responsible for:
Selection, acquisition and assessment of print and digital collections. Includes negotiating contracts with vendors and managing budgets;
Overseeing the delivery of Library events and programs by supervising the Coordinators responsible for programming;
Promotion of Library programs and services to the public;
Hiring and training Coordinators and clerical staff as needed;
Providing input on long-term planning, new policies and procedures;
Performing all the duties of the Chief Librarian in their absence;
