Summary of Duties The Washington State University Libraries invites applications for Digital Projects Archivist, a full-time, 12-month, grant-funded, 2-year temporary position with the possibility of extension, located on the Pullman campus. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Digital Initiatives and Special Collections. Start date is targeted for February 2018.

As a part of a larger team comprised of personnel from the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation (CDSC) and Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections at Washington State University, this position will support the digital workflow and lifecycle of digital materials in on-going CDSC projects and provide support for digital platforms including, but not limited to: Mukurtu CMS, Scalar, Omeka, CONTENTdm and WordPress. The Digital Projects Archivist will work directly with faculty, students and staff on projects that vary in scale and scope related to curating collections, providing culturally appropriate access to collections, and producing widely available resources for teaching, research and scholarship in the University. This position will play a leading role in supporting the Plateau Peoples’ Web Portal (Portal) in all aspects of the Portal project initiatives including 1) providing instructional support for tribal community users, community members, and institutional partners, 2) overseeing metadata creation, 3) updating and managing ingest of digital content from multiple institutions, 4) delivering training and support resources (online and in person) for the collaborative curation process and 5) assisting tribal staff with added content creation from digitized materials. The Digital Projects Archivist will be an integral part of the team at the CDSC and will work on grant-funded and ongoing projects.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Digital Projects Archivist:

  • Work with faculty, staff and students at the CDSC to support digitization projects.
  • Work with Portal representatives, CDSC staff and constituents to select primary sources for digitization, create and update metadata, and stage content for ingestion, improving and extending the Portals’ features and functionality to best serve community needs. This includes planning, testing, troubleshooting, and soliciting user feedback.
  • Support Portal users in all aspects of Portal workflow. This includes creating and updating support articles and videos targeted at end users, virtual and on-site instruction, training and support services.
  • Troubleshoot user needs in person or by phone, email, and web conferencing platforms.
  • Provide CDSC users, partners and stakeholders from a diverse range of institutions with introductions to the digital platforms. This includes in person and remote sessions.
  • Assist in the creation of secondary resources for tribal content including audio, video and multimedia.
  • Project management including: scheduling trainings, large meetings, and site visits with multiple stakeholders; producing project reports; maintaining schedule of activities to ensure project meets deadlines.
  • Local, regional, and national travel for general digitization and platform training and to work directly with partner organizations/projects.
  • Work to extend the Portal by adding, testing and deploying new features as a part of a larger development and support team.
  • Supervise and manage student workers.
  • Provide reference assistance at the WSU Libraries.
  • Collaborate with various units and departments at WSU to create resources for the Portal including, but not limited to: Native Programs, College of Education, Academic Outreach and Innovation and the Digital Technology and Culture Program.

Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development:

  • Participate in faculty governance and service as a library faculty member.
  • Conduct research for publications and presentations in areas of library and information science and other scholarly subjects.
  • Engage in library-wide initiatives as appropriate.
  • Maintain current awareness of content management technologies, trends on digital curation and Library Information Systems by reading professional literature, participating in professional organizations and committees, and attending workshops, institutes, seminars and conferences at local, state, regional, national and international levels.
  • Share with CDSC, library and WSU colleagues and department faculty and staff relevant knowledge gained from professional activities and use that knowledge to improve information systems operations and knowledge in the libraries.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited Library and Information Studies program at date of hire.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written, organizational, problem-solving and planning skills.

  • Ability to work with diverse sets of stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Mukurtu CMS and Scalar experience preferred.
  • Experience with digitization management and workflows.
  • Experience with instruction and training for a diverse set of users of digital systems.
  • Experience working with or supporting a Content Management System.
  • Experience in Special Collections or archives management.
  • Familiarity with current trends in digital library initiatives and digital curation.
  • Strong attention to access, privacy and security issues from diverse perspectives.
  • Commitment to working with diverse populations, particularly Native American communities.
  • Willingness to work in a face-paced, innovative team environment, assist in expanding the Portal community of users, lead and think creatively, problem-solve and be flexible.
