The Legislative Assembly Service of Saskatchewan (LAS) provides the administration and support required for the operation of the Legislative Assembly and provides organizational continuity from one Legislature to the next. The Members’ Services unit of the Legislative Library provides specialized and priority services to individual MLAs.
The Saskatchewan Legislative Library invites applications for the position of Members’ Services Research Assistant. Reporting to the Members’ Services Librarian, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing research and customized awareness support.
The Members’ Services Research Assistant undertakes assigned research on a wide range of public policy related issues, often complex and subject to tight deadlines and assists other professional staff with research using primary and secondary resources for research assignments. The duties of this position require the successful candidate to have the ability to plan, prioritize and balance diverse and conflicting workloads, demonstrated ability to work independently and to establish effective work relationships as a contributing member on various teams to complete work assignments. This position collects and collates background information and provides back-up support to the Members’ Services unit as required, compiles statistics and statistical data entry based on established formats, and provides assistance with library activities under the direction of the Directors of other Library units, as required.
As the ideal candidate, you will have knowledge of the theories, principles, standards, values and practices of library science; knowledge of the application of library standards and classification systems within the Legislative library and of current technology trends and technologies relating to the electronic delivery of information and library services, as well as library reference and research techniques and resources in a parliamentary library environment; general database components; keyboarding and basic computer skills using the Microsoft Office Suite of products; the English language, especially spelling variation, synonyms, and neologisms; superior literacy and numeracy skills, both oral and written; the form and content of various types of reference and other publications, and knowledge of standard information products in all formats including their content, organization, strengths, weaknesses, and authoritativeness; basic understanding of the organization and functions of the legislative branch of government and its relationship with other branches; an understanding of broad public policy issues as they relate to the Legislative Assembly; a general knowledge of democratic systems, parliamentary procedure, the Legislative Assembly Service; an understanding of the history and organization of government, especially of the Saskatchewan government and the province’s history.
The successful candidate will have completed a 3 or 4 year undergraduate university degree in a social, natural, applied science or humanities discipline. At least one year of further education in a Master of Library Science program from an accredited school of Library Science, for knowledge of the principles and practices of librarianship, comprehensive knowledge of secondary research techniques and processes in order to identify and retrieve materials in response to research assignments.
