The Woodward Library serves students, faculty and staff in the biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, dentistry, fisheries, engineering, forestry, geology, land and food systems, mathematics, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physics, rehabilitation sciences and wood science.
We are seeking 5 Student Librarians to provide reference services and instructional support for the Library’s reference desk and teaching programs.
The salary for this position is $20.60 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
We are seeking 5 Student Librarians for the fall and winter terms. The positions are the same but there are two start and end dates:
- 3 Student Librarians (Work Learn Program) to work 5-10 hours per week from September 2018 – April 2019, and
- 2 Student Librarians (Graduate Academic Assistant Program) to work 5-12 hours per week from September 2018 – December 2018.
Hours will be scheduled weekdays between 9 am and 6 pm and weekends between 11 am and 5 pm, and may vary during the term. Training is mandatory and will take place between August 27 and September 7, 2018.
- Student Librarians provide reference service and assist students/faculty/staff/community members in the use of resources such as indexes and databases, collections, UBC Library catalogue, Summon, RefWorks, reference sources, and other UBC Library resources and services.
- Student Librarians will have opportunities to assist with instructional support and other projects that may include collection development, video tutorials, assisting with Research Guides (LibGuides), and creating guides and handouts.
Applicants must currently be enrolled in the MLIS program, and have completed at least one term of the MLIS program or have equivalent library experience. Applicants must be familiar with the UBC Library system and its online resources. Preference will be given to those who have public service experience or teaching experience, and an academic background or an interest in engineering, forestry, health & medicine, land & food systems, or science. Excellent oral and written communication skills, initiative, flexibility, and ability to work independently are required. Reliability and flexibility in covering shifts is essential.
