Biomechanics and Control

When the body is used as a communication device, it is still subject to the constraints imposed by its components, such as muscles, bones and the nervous system. This stream of research aims to elucidate how communicative movements, whether produced orally or through manual signs, are constrained and determined by human mechanics and control, and how we can better understand these through computer simulation and experimental validation. This interdisciplinary research is both advancing our understanding of the basics of speech and movement and providing new possibilities for modelling oral surgery, computer animation, audiovisual telecommunications, and other applications.
