For my mashup assignment I really wanted to explore the flawed messages that popular media is giving viewers and how they reflect the naturalized power dynamics within Western society. The Bachelor seemed like an obvious choice to manipulate as although it is rampant with sexism, traditional gender roles, heteronormativity, and the clear, political choice to cast only white people with limited people of colour being thrown into the mix (most likely to avoid a lawsuit), it still has not been cancelled and is popular enough to have just finished its 20th season! I hope the juxtaposition of videos from the bachelor and scholars voices discussing issues of misrepresentation, under-representation, heteronormativity, and dangerous gender roles gets this message across!
