Weather Network = Fail.

by Jordan McGarry on April 8, 2010

Currently: Editing a Mix I just recorded to be posted tomorrow!

So, for the past two weeks… every morning… I checked the Weather Network in hopes of properly determining a suitable outfit for the day. ( I know, I’m a girl… in disguise as a good looking man) BUT, Weather Network always told me the wrong information! EXAMPLE, today… It said RAINY showers for the afternoon… so I thought to myself “Okay, you gotta wear a jacket if you wanna be warm.” Well… IT WAS SUNNY, and I was more than just WARM.

Other than that, this week has been AWESOME. MY LAST Chemistry Lab of the Year, AND my Last Physics Tutorial of the Year. I feel so… free. I think the next two weeks are going to be the hardest weeks and the best weeks… at the same time! The last Physics Exam, and the last Math Exam, I’ll EVER have to take… Oh my god… the thought of it makes my mouth water. I hope all of you have a good two weeks of Exams, and will probably be posting soon on my review of the courses and profs I had for 2nd term!

Tips for Prospective First Year Science Students

by Jordan McGarry on March 20, 2010

So, there are many things I wish I knew before registering for Courses and planning my schedule. Since I do not know much about the Arts Faculty, these tips will be aimed towards First Year Science Students. After almost a complete full year, I feel as though it is my duty to share my knowledge with all the prospective science *cough* Med *cough* students.

Tip #1: Know what courses you need!
Website Link for First Year Courses

Note: The above link is just RECOMMENDED Courses. Specialization requires courses other than these (Although most of the popular specializations require ALL of these courses) Google your prospective Specialization for more details.

This year, I found out that BIO 140 is required for Med School (Hopefully where I will end up). Problem is, that EVERYONE else knew this was required. So I was stuck with signing up for the Waiting List. This meant that I had to wait for people to drop the course for various reasons before I could get in. I did eventually get in, but this meant I had a HUGE course load for my 2nd term (Thus, me not blogging as much) Just realize that 2nd year students register LAST, so if you miss out on any first year courses that popular amongst the 1st year students, you are going to have a hard time getting in. BUT do take into account your ability to handle a course load, and don’t overload yourself. Just remember that there are summer school courses that last from a month to only two weeks depending on the course. You can always take 4 courses a semester in 1st year then in the summer take 2 more courses. Which brings me to my next tip:

Tip #2: The key to good grades, is a very small course load.

Think about it… if you only take English, Math, Physics, and Chem, then plan to take Bio in the summer or something like that. You have so much more time to work on the four courses you have. (Bio is a time-consumer… trust me) I know the thought of summer school isn’t very attractive, but in all honesty, it’s the best thing for you. I haven’t had a chance to take summer school yet, but I plan to this summer, and I will post more about how summer school was like then, but theoretically, it should work out. I didn’t know these tips before, and I had 5 courses in term one, and 5 courses with an extra BIO 140 Lab in Term 2, and I feel VERY overloaded. (But I seem to handle all the work very well) But this summer, I am signed up for CHEM 233, CHEM 235, and MICB 202, which in turn means that… if I want, I could only take 3 courses a semester in 2nd year. Which will make up for my massive course load in 1st year and balance out my grades.

Tip #3: This one… is the hardest of them all… During Exam Season (that includes Midterms)…. DEACTIVATE FACEBOOK!

“Oh my god! He did not just say that! He didn’t… NO WAY!” Is what you are all thinking right now, and I thought the same way too. But it wasn’t until my friend MADE me deactivate it that I finally realized how well it works! Before, I found myself studying for half an hour, then going on Facebook for an hour… it wasn’t very productive. Then I finally deactivated it and I get more work done! You can always reactivate your Facebook once all the exams are over! It’s almost like Facebook is a Blackhole of time wasting. I’d be willing to put money down that if Facebook did not exist, everyone would get 4.0 GPA.  For all my High School readers, do this for Provincials! Cause it’s only going to get worse once you get to UBC.

Tip #4: Find some sort of Motivation.

If you are motivated, everything just works out… it’s scientifically proven. “Good Grades” is not a good source of Motivation, believe me. My source of Motivation… is actually the lamest kind of Motivation ever. I find my Motivation from watching House. Everytime I watch an episode, I think to myself “I WANT TO BE HOUSE” and then I go upstairs and study right away. It’s what works for me, find what works for you! It can be a TV Show, it can be someone you look up to, it could be a Poem, it could be… really anything!… except Grades. Grades as a source of motivation, isn’t very smart. Sure, it feels awesome when you get an A+ on a Chemistry Midterm on the Atomic Orbitals of an Atom, but what happens when you get a C- on a Physics Midterm on Atomic Nuclei. Your motivation will be SHOT. You could say “That bad grade will make me work harder to get a better grade!” But that isn’t a good way to look at it! If you find a source of motivation that never lets you down, and will always be there (Like House). You’ll never feel down, and you’ll ALWAYS get good grades.

and Finally… the best tip of all.

Tip #5: PARTY!

School is SOO stressful. You gotta have some time to party. I remember thinking to myself before I entered UBC, “I am never going to party, I am just going to study everyday, 24/7, and never do anything else!” Well, obviously I broke that rule, but it was the best thing for me! Just know your limits… play within it. (Lame… I know) It makes a big difference if you let off some steam every once and awhile. There isn’t much to say about this one, just have some fun every once awhile, loosen up! Don’t let school take over your life!

So those are my tips, expect more information about summer school once I finish it! Hope you guys found this useful!

Olympic Withdrawal

by Jordan McGarry on March 3, 2010

Currently: Sitting in Irving waiting for my next class.

I’m sure all you “Vancouverites” are all super depressed that the Olympics are no longer here. Before the break, I thought the Olympics were just going to be a pain when it comes to getting around and all that, but it ended up to be the best two weeks of my life. I pretty much party’ed everyday, on the streets, or in a club, or anywhere I saw the Canadian Flag being waved. Now that is all over, I can’t help but be depressed and emotional, I have little to no motivation to do anything in school. It’s like I just broke up with a long-term girlfriend… and this girl was the most beautiful of all… the Olympics.

So, on the topic of school, I am thinking of taking Summer School. I am contemplating taking CHEM 233, CHEM 235 from May to Mid June, then from Mid June to Mid July take BIO 200. Get it over with, then come Year 2, I will be able to have an easy course schedule and have more time to enjoy life, instead of stress myself out. I am thinking of taking BIOCHEM in Term 2 of my 2nd year as well, and this would help me do that. Anyones opinion would be greatly appreciated.

It is almost time for Physics, so I unfortunately have to end my blog post here, even though I have so much more to say about the Olympics and everything. But so long for now!

A Needed Break

by Jordan McGarry on February 13, 2010

Currently: Waiting for NBA All-Star Saturday Night to start… can’t wait for the Dunk Contest.

After a month and a half of school, I am so happy it is break time. After staying up til 2am studying for Midterms, and working for what seemed like days on homework, I’m glad that I have two weeks off to enjoy the Olympics and all the awesome events that are coming to Vancouver because of it. But before we get to the break, what happened with my N Test you ask? Well, I passed my Novice Drivers Test!! I am able to drive on my own, and it’s the best. I’ll be able to drive to all the free concerts, club events, and everything that comes as a result of the Olympics.

If you guys don’t know, there are many free concerts from major artists, all over Vancouver and Whistler. Livecity Vancouver has a list of all of them, you can either google them or search them on Facebook. The one concert I’m going to go to (hopefully) is the Deadmau5 Concert. The only thing that I am worried about, is Livecity Yaletown can only hold 8,000 to 10,000 people, but the Facebook Event has 15,000 confirmed guests… so I’ll have to go super early. Other than that, there are Events at Gossip that I am looking forward too. The events I have tickets for are Steve Aoki, Benny Benassi, and Armin Van Buuren. But so many more artists are coming, like LMFAO, Steve Angello, and Calvin Harris. This break is going to be one big party!

Here’s a video of Paul Van Dyke, who I would’ve went too, if I didn’t have school the day after:

I hope you all have a good break! Expect Party Updates in the near future!!

Driving Exam

by Jordan McGarry on January 30, 2010

Currently: Taking a break from Integral Calculus.

So, this upcoming Friday, I will be attempting to pass the Road Exam and get my Novice Drivers License… FINALLY. I’ve been practicing for about 3 months now with an instructor. So far, I’m 70% ready… for me it’s just the mental mindgame that I need to overcome to get my N. I have the skills to drive well, I just get nervous while driving because I keep thinking to myself that I am not a good driver, and therefore, act like a bad driver. This Road Exam couldn’t of come at a worse time too, Midterms + Practcing Driving don’t work well together. BUT! I need my N for the Reading Break, cause that will make it about 70 times more fun, so I have no choice. I know what you’re all thinking… why don’t I just take my N Test during Reading Break, but there’s a problem with that. ICBC ISN’T DOING ROAD TESTS DURING OLYMPICS…!! So if I don’t get it this Friday, I’ll be waiting for about 2 months to get my retry, because they are booked til the end of March!!!!

If any of you, have any tips, or any stories about taking Road Exams, help me out here!!!

EDIT: If any of you are interesting in any my mixes, I uploaded one onto my Facebook Fan Page, here’s a link, become a fan and tell me what you think!!

The One Picture that Describes University Life

University Life

This is how I’m feeling right now. Sorry for the lack of blogging, this term is about 10.0432 times harder than the first term… I calculated that myself.

Student Leadership Conference 2010

by Jordan McGarry on January 9, 2010

Currently: Writing this Blog Post as I ride the 33 Bus to King Edward Station

Today, I volunteered for the Student Leadership Conference (SLC 2010) as a part of the AV Team. It only seems right that I work in the Audio/Visual Component of the Conference considering I set-up more than a few DJ rigs. My job was to film the Feature Presenters so that the SLC can keep these films in their records and possibly post them online (if my videos are good enough). The Camera Tripod I was given was a little bit fidgety in the Horizontal Movement aspect of things.

My first Filming job was for Christian (forgot his last name… if someone went to that presenter and remembers his last name, just remind me) in Hebb Theatre. There were quite a few problems here, in that the mic for Hebb was no where to be found. This lead to problems for me because I had to move closer to the Presenter to pick up his voice on my camera mic. However, Christian loved to move around and interact with the students watching him, so the footage is all over the place, and I found myself twisting around into positions I didn’t even know my body was capable of producing. His presentation was excellent though, he really engaged the students and it wasn’t simply a “let me talk, you listen” kind of presentation. It was very inspiring and interesting as a listener, and I was very fortunate to get to film it.

After that, we had about a 3 and a half hour gap between that presentation and the next presentation I was supposed to film. So during this time, I assisted the AV Trouble Shooting team in minor jobs. During lunch, I also had this AMAZING Chicken Salad Sandwich. SLC has excellent food! The volunteers had time to mingle and such, get to know each other, it was good times.

My last presentation in which I had to film, was from one of our very own Bob Hancock, and his presentation was on Biological Science and his leadership in that field. Me, being a scientist in training, found this pretty interesting. He continued to explain the process in leading a lab, and producing pharmaceuticals that can be used globally in Hospitals or for other purposes. Once again, I was very fortunate to get another presenter that interested me, even if I was a volunteer at the event. Unfortunately, I had to go home because I have a massive pile of homework waiting for me and I wasn’t able to go to the Chan Center to witness the last Keynote Speaker and see the closing “Light Show”. (Yeah, you heard me… LIGHT SHOW!)

Student Leadership Conference is a very exciting and beneficial conference, volunteer or participant. It motivates and prepares you to experience the full potential of the leader that lives inside every one of us. So for those of you who didn’t participate this year, you always have next year to make up for it! I know I’ll definitely be back.

P90….. X!

by Jordan McGarry on January 5, 2010

Currently: Finishing up reading my English 112 Assigned reading.

So, my New Years Resolution this year was to get in shape and bulk up. Prior to working out, I weighed only a measly 125lbs. A week later, I weigh 132lbs… I gained 7lbs of PURE MUSCLE. (I hope.) Now, I know what you’re all thinking… how did I do this!? Simple. P90X! Its a 90-day workout routine, you do it everyday, for about an hour. (Except for when its the Yoga Day, I can’t do that routine to save my life, so I cut it short) You basically work on a different part of the body everyday, and normally alternate between Upper Body and Lower Body / Cardio. The first half of the Routine is as follows:

Monday: Chest, Back, and Abs
Tuesday: Pylometrics (HARD AS HELL, basically works your legs and core)
Wednesday: Shoulder, Arms, and Abs
Thursday: Yoga (I fail at Yoga)
Friday: Legs, Back, and Abs
Saturday: Cardio
Sunday: Your Rest Day

On top of the workout, I also take two different supplements.  A Creatine Supplement and a Protein Supplement. The Creatine Supplement is called “Cell-Tech” and GUARANTEES, that I gain 7lbs in the first week. (Which I did) The Protein Supplement is called “Quick Mass” and it has HIGH calories and HIGH protein, to help me gain weight as quick as possible. Some of the Calories turn to fat obviously, but that’s what working out is for, to burn those off!!

So that is my New Years Resolution, the first one I’ve ever actually stuck too for more than a week.
