Cultural Transition to UBC

It has been 2 weeks since my arrival to UBC- my dream university for a few years now.

It is indeed my first time moving into a new country, far away from home. It was intimidating and nerve wrecking, however I couldn’t stop feeling excited for the journey that awaits ahead. Settling down into my new dorm room in Totem Park residence, I observe the breath-taking environment that surrounds me: the green trees, the people, and of course, the food.

In that moment, I convinced myself that I was ready for this new chapter in my life. I am ready for university.

Plunging to Jump Start, I was able to make an amazing group of friends who are supportive and who I know will be with me long-lastingly. Making friends is not always easy. Personally, I view myself as an introvert and a shy individual. However coming here, the first lesson I’ve learnt is to step out of your comfort zone, and approach new friends no matter how awkward it may be. Who knows? it may be a positive beginning!

The Jump Start orientation program has really helped me to transition into this new life at UBC. It was an amazing two weeks which have motivated me more into becoming a more well-rounded young lady. I have asked myself this question before: #AMIUBC…but now, I can confidently answer with a smile that #IAMUBC
