How to provide stable addresses for UBC catalogue records:

Because Voyager is session-based, web addresses displayed in the address line after a catalogue search are not stable, i.e. they will not work if copied & pasted into an e-mail, document or web page.

Create a Persistent URL to the Catalogue
http://www.library.ubc.ca/home/voyager/searchscript.html
The stable URL can then be included in the e-mail or webpage
Note: You may need to use an ISBN or ISSN where a title search finds multiple records.
If there is no ISBN, use the DBCN alphanumeric string found at field 035 under the “MARC FORMAT” tab.

How to provide stable addresses for journal articles:

Like UBC’s Voyager Catalogue, many journal databases are also session-based.
As a result, web addresses for journal articles are not stable and will not work properly if copied and pasted into e-mails or other documents.

Some articles will have a DOI [Digital Object Identifier] number. A DOI is a unique web address for a specific journal article. A DOI is the standard number, similar to an ISBN.

CrossRef http://www.crossref.org/ is the citation linking backbone, i.e. a collaborative reference linking service that allows the user to click on a citation and be taken directly to the target content. CrossRef provides a DOI Resolver at http://www.crossref.org/

If you encounter a DOI (e.g., 10.1037/0003-066X.59.1.29) that is not hyperlinked, enter the DOI in CrossRef’s DOI Resolver box, then press the submit button.

NOTE: Use the DOI Resolver to turn a DOI into a URL by adding http://dx.doi.org/ before the DOI, e.g. http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/0003-066X.59.1.29

Other vendors have decided not to use DOI. Instead these vendors provide a persistent link [EBSCO] or a stable URL [JStor] for each journal article.

Look for a field labelled Persistent link or Stable URL within the journal article record.
Highlight the link, copy [Ctrl-C] then paste [Ctrl-V] that link into an email or document. Examples:

BMJ: British Medical Journal BMJ 2004;328:1458 (19 June), doi:10.1136/bmj.328.7454.1458-a
create link by adding http://dx.doi.org/ to DOI, e.g. http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bmj.328.7454.1458-a

EBSCO. Persistent link: http://search.epnet.com/direct.asp?an=12232321&db=aph

JStor: Citation / Stable URL
Stable URL: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0026-7902%28194601%2930%3A1%3C27%3ATLD%3E2.0.CO%3B2-1

Revised from Tips from the WebCT course Linking eLearning with the eLibrary [June 1, 2004]

MARC 21 COMMANDS

ISBN 020
Call Number 090
Author 100
Title/alternate title(s) 245
Publisher/Date of pub’n* 260*
Physical description 300
Dates of coverage 360
Series Note 440
Indexing note (where indexed) 510
Notes (re publisher mergers, etc) 580
Subject(s) 600
Topographical subject 650
Continues [earlier name] 780
Continued by [later name] 785

*Note “Publisher/Date of pub’n 260″ is actually a complex field with 3
subfields.

To search by PUBLISHER use 260b, because 260a is PLACE and 260c is DATE,
e.g. “260 0_ |a Toronto : |b Carswell, |c 2002.”

Searching boolean keywords for 260b “Irwin law” will find Irwin Law
titles.

If uncertain if a field has subfield codes, check the MARC FORMAT tab
for a particular item.

• You can look up an item by its call number.

• Enter the number in a string without spaces, put a period before the first cutter (the number letter combination).

• Put a space between the call number and the year.

• You cannot look something up by a volume number.

eg) Enter the call number, including punctuation, e.g.: qa76.9.c66 r64 1997

To retrieve records for law reports by their abbreviations in Voyager OPAC, you must enter the abbreviation in quotations with spaces between the letters.

For example to find DLR or D.L.R. search as “D L R ” or “D L R” using either Keyword relevance or Keyword boolean.
