Digital Initiatives

The Digital Initiatives unit is a key part of UBC Library’s effort to adapt to the evolving needs of faculty and students and to support teaching, research and learning at UBC. Our goal is to create sustainable, world-class programs and processes to make the collections and research at UBC available to the world and to ensure the authentic, long-term preservation of these digital holdings for the future. The Digital Initiatives portfolio includes digitization, scholarly communications and copyright and digital repository services.

Position Summary

The Digital Projects Librarian serves as project manager for digitization projects with UBC Library as well as internal and external partners.  In collaboration with the Head, Digital Programs and Services, this position is responsible for the development and management of the Library’s locally created digital collections.  In consultation with other members of the Library, plans digitization projects and is responsible for the coordination and management of contracts, staff, services and other project requirements. 



  • A graduate degree from an accredited school of Library, Archival and Information Science
  • Demonstrated project management, planning and implementation skills and experience
  • Extensive familiarity with the digital library environment
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge of current digital reformatting and digital conversion trends and best practices
  • Demonstrated broad knowledge and experience relating to the application of metadata to digital objects and extensive familiarity with metadata standards and guidelines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital reformatting and digital conversion policies and technical procedures.
  • Experience with digital preservation tools, processes and digitization projects
  • Knowledge of website design and construction and database development,
  • Experience in the application of best practices in digital projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of the hardware and software associated with digitization work.
  • Flexibility and willingness to assume a variety of assignments.
  • Listens to, encourages and expresses creative and innovative ideas. Open to experiment and improvisation with new ways of approaching processes, tasks or problems.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships and engage in workplace culture.

  • Experience with CONTENTdm, DSpace, Archivematica, and Archive-IT software
  • Supervisory or related staff coordination experience, such as project team lead assignments, especially around scheduling staff and managing workflows.
  • Experience in a research or other large academic library.
  • Knowledge of intellectual property and copyright issues as they relate to digital reformatting and scholarly communication
  • Knowledge about scholarly communication issues and strong interest in pursuing the development of alternative publishing venues for faculty and students
  • Experience with archival collections containing non-print materials such as microforms, disks, films and audio recordings in various formats.
  • Experience with photography and scanning in a library or archival environment sufficient to be fluently conversant with image capture and manipulation issues


Reports to Head, Digital Programs and Services.  Consults with internal and external colleagues as  required.  A high degree of planning, collaboration, and coordination with other librarians and departments is required.  Leads project teams that may involve working with external partners.  Supervises work of library and student assistants as well as external contractors.


  1. Collaborates with librarians and faculty to develop and implement digitization projects. Directs digitization projects including the development of workflows and project schedules, coordination of staff and equipment resources and quality control.
  2. Plans and implements digital preservation activities using tools including Archivematica and Archive-It.
  3. Develops and documents quality control practices and procedures to ensure that digital objects and metadata meet internal standards.
  4. Coordinates the development of metadata to support the discovery and management of digital content.
  5. Oversees, monitors and manages digitization activities including supervising staff and students, creating training materials and procedural documentation, security and proper handling of materials, and coordinating equipment and software planning.
  6. Develops and maintains appropriate documentation of projects throughout the digital lifecycle.
  7. Develops and applies assessment criteria for digital collections.
  8. Manages the implementation, customization and troubleshooting of repository software and tools.
  9. Working with librarians and faculty, identifies opportunities for digitization and plans the projects for conversion of approved collections.
  10. Coordinates the promotion of digital collections with other Library units and Library Communications.
  11. Provides technical advice, training and troubleshooting related to digitization projects, platforms, and tools.
  12. Liaises with external digitization partners and vendors as appropriate.
  13. Supervises students and staff as required.
  14. Participates in library committees and works on special projects as assigned.



This position is a full-time, term appointment for one year.
