The University of British Columbia Library is one of the largest academic libraries in Canada providing access to a collection of over 7M items. POSITION SUMMARY

UBC Library’s Assessment Team helps improve the quality of UBC Library programs and the experience of library users by supporting evidence based planning throughout the library.  The Assessment & Planning Librarian leads the Assessment Team and works with library administrators and managers to coordinate assessment initiatives; improve access to existing library data; collect new data to inform Library decisions; and incorporate evidence based planning into the implementation of UBC Library’s Strategic Framework. 

Effective assessment is collaborative and depends on the curiosity and engagement of library employees who strive to understand and meet user needs.  The Assessment & Planning Librarian champions evidence based planning and helps colleagues develop expertise in practical assessment methods.  Their work moves UBC Library closer to its vision for assessment, a place where: 

  • library managers and administrators collaborate with the Assessment & Planning Librarian to answer specific questions about services and user needs;
  • existing data is accessible, presented with clarity, and used in creative new ways;
  • relationships with faculty and students are strengthened through responsive feedback cycles; 
  • library management employs a range of relevant metrics and reports in their decisions;
  • University administrators are confident that UBC Library decisions are based on the best available evidence.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to and receives general direction from the Deputy University Librarian (DUL) [or another member of the Library Executive team].  Works in cooperation and consultation with members of the Library Executive Team (LibExec), Library Operations Team (LOT), and other library to support evidence based planning throughout the Library.  Supervises and coordinates the work of the Assessment Team (1.5 FTE in addition to the Assessment & Planning Librarian).  Works collaboratively with library managers, making recommendations as required to maintain effective statistics gathering and reporting.  Serves on committees and working groups as required. 

DUTIES

  1. Provide leadership in the prioritization, coordination, and promotion of assessment activities with emphasis on two projects:
    1. Analyze, interpret, and present results of the 2019 Library Survey, including making recommendations and identifying questions to explore in follow-up assessments.
    2. Work collaboratively with administrators, managers, and committees to incorporate evidence based planning into the implementation of UBC Library’s Strategic Framework.
  2. Foster a culture of inquiry among Library employees, including helping colleagues develop expertise in assessment tools and methods.
  3. Provide assessment design consultations, helping internal stakeholders plan and implement assessment projects by drawing on a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods (may include focus groups, surveys, user experience studies, observation studies).
  4. Prepare and deliver reports and presentations to a range of internal stakeholders.
  5. Lead the Assessment Team, coordinating its data and reporting functions.  As a member of the Team, prioritize and respond to library employee requests for data, reports, and visualizations.
  6. Oversee the Library’s implementation of Tableau Server in cooperation with the Assessment Analyst and UBC IT.
  7. Oversee the collection and reporting of data for statistical surveys (ARL, CARL, CPSLD) and for internal library needs, in cooperation with the Administrative & Project Assistant.
  8. Chair the Assessment Advisory Group (AAG) and serve as a member of the Library Operations Team (LOT); participate in other working groups or committees as required.
  9. Perform other duties related to the qualifications and requirements of the job.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • A graduate degree from an accredited school of Library, Archival, and Information Science
  • Experience with assessment in an academic library environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with a range of quantitative and qualitative assessment methods
  • Familiarity with data visualization concepts and experience with visualization tools (e.g. Tableau)
  • Experience developing partnerships and successful collaborations with a variety of stakeholders
  • Record of planning and leading projects, and bringing them to conclusion in a timely fashion
  • Open to experiment and improvise with new ways of approaching processes, tasks or problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively through active listening and appreciative inquiry; open to providing and receiving constructive feedback
  • Flexibility and willingness to assume a variety of responsibilities in a changing work environment
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Ability to recognize, respect and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds
  • Excellent communication, analytical, organizational, problem solving, and interpersonal skills

Preferred

  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience planning and facilitating focus groups or other group discussions
  • Experience teaching workshops
  • Familiarity with academic library statistical surveys (e.g. ARL, CARL)
  • Engagement in the library assessment community

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

Current and comprehensive knowledge of academic library assessment resources, methods, and tools.  Effective project management skills.  Timely, clear written reports and oral presentations. Ability to interact effectively and work productively, cooperatively and collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups in an evolving library assessment environment. Good working relations with library employees, including administrators and managers.  Awareness of developments in relevant areas of library assessment. Ability to handle complexity and diversity in the academic research environment.  Imaginative, innovative and analytical approaches to providing timely and cost-effective services.  Commitment to iterative improvement of services.  Effective management skills. 

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT AND SALARY

This position is a full-time, term appointment for one year.

We are seeking applications from Librarians with up to 10 years of experience.  However, all internal candidates will be considered regardless of years of experience and are encouraged to apply. Salary will be commensurate with experience and academic/professional qualifications.
