Esri International User Conference Student Assistantship Program

Through the Student Assistantship Program, Esri sponsors a number of
students to participate in the annual Esri International User
Conference. The next conference will take place July 11–15, 2011.

If you are a graduate student or fourth-year undergraduate student who
is currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in the
United States and who uses GIS software, you may apply for the student
assistantship program. Esri will select up to 60 students to take part
in the program, which includes monitoring sessions, registration,
staffing, and overall logistics. Esri also sets aside time for the
students to attend sessions. Students receive a full registration
package for the conference, hotel accommodations, and a small stipend
for meals but pay for their own travel and personal expenses.

Summer Internship Program

Our Summer Internship Program provides valuable work experience while
you continue your education or prepare for life after graduation. The
program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Internships
are available at Esri headquarters in Redlands, California, and in our
regional offices throughout the United States. Each internship is a paid
position and will be up to 12 weeks long.

  •  be notified when new articles and dissertations are published on your topic
  • receive Table of Contents for the latest issue of your favorite journal

  •  be notified of funding and upcoming conference opportunities
  • follow news stories and blogs

No matter what your discipline, you’ll leave the session having set up a number of alerts to stay up-to-date with your research interests!

Credo Reference is a giant online reference library that provides access to a selection of reference books including encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations, plus a broad range of subject-specific titles covering everything from literature to history to psychology to geography.

In addition to the individual reference works, Credo Reference also adds a unique layer with Concept Maps and Topic Pages, and offers extensive customizability. Search results are sorted into Topic pages (which include articles, books, news, images, and videos) and Reference Entries.

The Concept Maps provide a unique entry way into a topic. The maps are visual interactive maps that displays how search terms and topics in Credo Reference are interconnected.  Simply search for your topic to generate a topic map, and then click a concept node to see an entry for that particular entry.

The trial is on now until December 31, 2010. Give it a try and don’t forget to send your feedback using this form.

This month, the UBC Library will begin hosting meetings of the newly-rekindled UBC GIS Users Group.  This group will be a gathering of students, researchers, faculty and staff on campus who work in some way with, or are interested in, geographical information systems (or science) (GIS).  The meetings will be held monthly on the last Wednesday of the month in Koerner Library Room 216 at 4:00pm.  There will be a speaker, followed by a trip to Koerner’s Pub for refreshments.

First Meeting:

Presentation: overview of GIS services and facilities provided by UBC Library (including the new GIS/Research Data Lab), followed by tours of the lab

Future Meetings:

At future meetings we are hoping to have students, researchers, faculty and staff from around campus talk about how they are using GIS in their work.  There are a lot of exciting, state-of-the-art projects happening around campus, and this will be a great way for people to share their work and network with other GIS users.
