We’re getting ready to kick off the 9th annual UBC Library United Way Spelling Bee on Thursday, October 11.

UBC faculty, staff, and students are invited to create a team of 4-10 people and compete for the win in this annual cross-campus event to raise awareness for the United Way.

  • Date: Thursday, October 11
  • Time: 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Location: 4th floor Golden Jubilee Room, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (1961 East Mall, Vancouver, B.C.)

To register your team, fill out the online form by October 5th.  Registration is on a first come, first served basis, so don’t delay!

Units from across campus participated in the annual UBC Library/United Way Spelling Bee on November 16 in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. The Library was represented by Team Auto Correct and Show Me the Honey, with an honorable mention to Team Auto Correct for spelling 11 out of the 20 words correctly! See the Spelling Bee word list.

The UBC Library and United Way Spelling Bee was tied and won by both The English Exoterics (the Department of English, and four-time champions) and the Skullduggery (PhD English students). Congratulations to the winners!

The Spelling Bee was part of the UBC Community United Way Campaign, which has raised more than $350,000 this year to help individuals in the Lower Mainland.

Team entry fees are by donation, with all proceeds going to support UBC’s annual United Way campaign.

The 6th annual United Way and UBC Library Spelling Bee was held on October 13. The Lexicons (Ceremonies and Events) took the championship cup by spelling 17/20 of the challenging words correctly. Team members included Ellis Courtney, Helen Gabor, Christina Girardi, Sheila Jones, Melissa Picher Kelly, Sarah Pickstone, Matt Ramsey and Herbert Rosengarten.

Team Auto Correct (UBC Library) and last years winners, Hive Minds (UBC Press) tied for second place.

The Lexicons

The annual cross-campus event raises awareness for United Way, with all proceeds going to support UBC’s annual United Way campaign during the month of October. The teams were asked to spell words such as tintinnabulation, suffrutescent and gourmand.

UBC Library and the United Way teamed up for the fifth annual Spelling Bee, which took place Tuesday, October 7 at the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. 

The hour-long event culminated in crowning this year’s winning team: UBC Hive Minds (Ann Macklem, Alexa Love, Megan Malashewsky, Megan Brand, Lesley Erickson, Valerie Nair, Murray Tong, Nadine Pedersen), from UBC Press.

UBC Press’s team, Hive Minds, won the 5th annual Spelling Bee.

16 teams competed for glory, with an unprecedented four-way tie for second place: The Lexicons (Ceremonies and Events), Bombeez (Building Operations), former Bee winners the English Exoterics (English Department) and Spell Library (UBC Library).

The cross-campus team competition to raise awareness for the United Way featured words such as sesquipedalian, syzygy and acetylsalicylic.

 

The fourth annual UBC Library and United Way Spelling Bee drew a crowd of over 100 spellers and a total of 17 teams.

During a sudden-death overtime round, Jan Wallace, head of the David Lam Management Research Library stepped to the mic to represent the David Lam Library team “Show Me the Honey” against the UBC Ceremonies and Special Events “Lexicons” – and brought home the first victory for a UBC Library team.

Trish Rosseel, Acting Head of the Humanities & Social Sciences Division at Koerner Library, lead the event as MC and challenged competitors with words such as graupel, appoggiatura and foofaraw. 

The cross-campus team competition to raise awareness for the United Way was broadcast live on CiTR, UBC’s campus-based alternative programming radio. 

The event was also featured in the November 13 edition of the Ubyssey in “Our Campus: UBC abuzz during 4th annual charity spelling bee.”
