SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The Visualization and Emerging Media Librarian leads the design, creation, development and implementation of programs and services to support data visualization and emerging media needs in teaching, learning, scholarship, and research.

The Librarian will manage, and assist users in managing, data visualization projects including developing project plans, assessment, identification of appropriate resources required, design, data mining/analysis and implementation as required to achieve successful data visualization.  This individual collaborates with users, teams, and departments across the University and in the community, and works collegially to develop a planned and strategic approach to this new area of service. The position conducts individual and specific needs assessments to inform service, technical, teaching & learning, and infrastructural requirements. This position is also responsible for designing and delivering training, presentations, workshops, and classes on approaching, creating, implementing and using visualization and immersion tools in a variety of academic settings.

The position also provides reference and information services to faculty, students and other users in UBC’s Okanagan campus Library. Assumes responsibility for designated subject areas and liaison with assigned departments. Provides web-based and classroom instruction and assistance in use of information resources. Plans and implements services that respond to needs of users in UBC’s Okanagan campus Library. Participates in the development of Library policy, procedures and services. Assumes responsibility for coordination and management of staff, services and projects, as required. Evening and weekend work may be required. The nature and scope of responsibilities for this and other Library positions are expected to change as the Library organization evolves.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A graduate degree from an ALA-accredited Library Science program is required. An academic background in a subject area within the scope of UBC’s Okanagan campus or equivalent knowledge gained through professional experience is required.

Demonstrated knowledge of data extraction, analysis, and visualization methods. Experience using proprietary and open-source digital technologies, such as geographic information systems, statistical software, and visualization tools such as Unity, D3.js, Tableau, Mathematica, and/or R.

Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work in a team situation; ability to make decisions based on problem solving skills; and the ability to focus on important issues are essential.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience developing and supporting visualizations in teaching, scholarship, and scholarly communication projects. Knowledge of research data management and digital preservation.

Experience in assisting scholars in the development of digital scholarship.

As this position will have a strong focus on supporting the academic mission of the University, experience with the following would be considered a significant asset:

  • preparing and facilitating workshops and presentations
  • planning, creating, and updating digital learning objects (including tutorials, learning modules, and instructional materials)
  • formal teaching experience

An advanced academic degree in a field related to the responsibilities of the position (such as humanities, sciences, social sciences, computer science, data sciences, or design) preferred.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Associate Chief Librarian at UBC’s Okanagan campus Library. Coordinates activities with other Librarians at UBC’s Okanagan campus and collaborates with Librarians throughout the UBC Library system. Works closely and collaboratively with the Senior Manager, Media and Classroom Services and the Director, Centre for Teaching and Learning. Maintains a strong working relationship with the Manager, UBC Studios, and Director, Advanced Research Computing (ARC) and members of the ARC team.

May be requested to act on behalf of the Associate Chief Librarian at UBC’s Okanagan campus

Library. Works closely with colleagues in other units within UBC. Works with faculty, students, staff and the public.

DUTIES:

Visualization and Emerging Media Services:

  1. Designs, develops and implements programming and services for The Commons visualization, immersion, and emerging media spaces.
  2. Assists faculty with the integration of data visualization and emerging media into the design, assessment, and delivery of their courses.
  3. Collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to contribute expertise to visualization projects, research, practice, teaching, and classes in a range of disciplines.
  4. Leads presentations, workshops, and classes, for faculty, staff, and students, and creates and shares learning materials and guides for users, to facilitate the creation of visualizations and the use of visualization and immersive tools.
  5. Leads the identification and deployment of applications, software, and technology requirements.
  6. Provides consultation, support, teaching, and training to users about tools, techniques, and methods.
  7. Leads the development of policy and procedures related to The Commons Visualization and Emerging Media Studio.
  8. Partners with internal outreach teams and with campus service and support areas to promote and encourage use of campus visualization spaces.

Reference and Research Services:

  1. Provides reference and research services to UBC’s Okanagan campus students, staff and faculty members as well as collaborates with UBC’s Vancouver campus Librarians to provide services to all UBC faculty, staff and students and members of the public, as required.
  2. Provides training and back-up for Library Services Assistants.
  3. Works with other staff to develop and maintain the UBC’s Okanagan Campus Library presence on the UBC Library web pages and throughout UBC, as appropriate.
  4. As the librarian responsible for particular subjects, advises and assists in difficult or extensive searches in these areas. Employs the full range of Internet, electronic and print resources, as required.

Library Teaching and Orientation:

  1. Teaches classes in the use of resources available to users of the Library, including the Library’s catalogue, print resources and e-resources. May also provide instruction in the use of a variety of types of software.
  2. Undertakes specialized instructional programs including planning, designing and organizing and using various formats for presentation.
  3. Participates in orientation tours and Library-use instruction programs.
  4. Prepares handouts, research guides and informational brochures in collaboration with UBC’s Vancouver campus Library.
  5. Provides instruction/presentations to faculty, staff, and students (in the Library, online and in the faculty departments).

Faculty Liaison:

  1. Initiates and maintains contact with faculty in assigned departments
  2. Liaises with faculty on issues of copyright, collection development and management, and on issues related to properly archiving research outputs.
  3. Works with faculty on the development and delivery of information and research modules, services and courses or workshops and course readings for students at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
  4. Attends faculty meetings and events and participates in faculty committees in designated subject areas as appropriate.
  5. Responds to requests from faculty for Library involvement in accreditation, new course proposals, etc., in consultation with the Associate Chief Librarian.

Collection Development and Management:

  1. Responsible for the selection of new resources in designated subject areas for the Library at UBC’s Okanagan campus in consultation with other UBC Librarians and departmental representatives.
  2. Participates in the development and application of criteria for the review of electronic subscriptions, transfer of print materials to storage and for weeding.
  3. In consultation with other UBC Librarians, participates in the evaluation of potential gifts-in-kind to the Library at UBC’s Okanagan campus.
  4. Participates in the monitoring and maintenance of UBC’s Okanagan Campus Library reference collection.

Supervision and Administration:

  1. May be required to supervise staff.
  2. May be required to act as Associate Chief Librarian in their absence.

Library Liaison:

  1. Represents the UBC Okanagan campus Library on Library committees, working groups and task forces.
  2. Liaises with Librarians in other areas of the UBC Library system.
  3. Maintains an awareness of new literature and research developments in areas of specialization and emerging trends in academic libraries.
  4. Keeps abreast of developments in public services across UBC Library and more widely.

Other Activities:

  1. Identifies best practices and implements as appropriate.
  2. Participates in professional and university-wide initiatives.
  3. Seeks funding opportunities and completes grant applications within UBC’s Okanagan campus Library portfolio and in collaboration with UBC’s Vancouver campus as appropriate.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITY:

The Library at UBC’s Okanagan campus invites applications from recently graduated, innovative, enthusiastic, service-oriented librarians for a 0.75 FTE, 1 year fixed term position as Librarian, Southern Medical Program. The successful candidate will be a key member of UBC’s distributed medical program administered by the Faculty of Medicine and will have specific responsibility for library services associated with the Southern Medical Program located at the Okanagan campus of UBC.

Reporting jointly to the Associate Chief Librarian at the UBC Okanagan Library and the Regional Associate Dean, Interior, the Librarian, Southern Medical Program, provides leadership in the creation, development, and delivery of instructional programs, collections and services to the students and faculty involved in the Southern Medical Program. The Librarian, Southern Medical Program, is active within the Faculty of Medicine, working closely with colleagues at UBC’s Vancouver campus, the University of Northern British Columbia and the University of Victoria. The successful candidate will be a key collaborator at teaching hospitals and clinical sites within the Interior Health Authority. The Librarian, Southern Medical Program, prepares and monitors the annual budget for library collections and services for the Southern Medical Program. Supervision of a library assistant may be required.

The Librarian, Southern Medical Program, will also contribute to reference services and participates in the overall planning for library services and spaces at the Okanagan Campus Library. They will also assume liaison duties in Human Kinetics and Biology.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: A graduate degree from an accredited school of Library, Archival and Information Science; knowledge of library systems and applications; demonstrated competencies in reference and instructional methodologies in an academic, hospital or research setting, with an emphasis on evidence based practice; excellent organizational and analytical skills; excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate at a distance; proven ability to work well independently and within large and complex teams; commitment to developing professional knowledge and skills on a continuing basis; the ability and willingness to travel to various locations in British Columbia as required. Some weekend and evening work will be required.

Preferred: Academic library experience; a background working in health sciences libraries and with emerging technologies; e-resource acquisition and evaluation experience.

RELATIONSHIPS:

REFERENCE AND RESEARCH SUPPORT
  • Provides in-depth reference service for medical sciences, assigned liaison subject areas, and participates in an on-call rota. Provision of these services may take place on campus or remotely, and will include services provided in relevant hospital or health authority settings.
  • Liaises with SMP researchers and students conducting research.
INFORMATICS AND INSTRUCTION
  • Participates in teaching in the Informatics program with a particular emphasis on information literacy and support of evidence-based practice.
  • Develops web and print instructional materials for faculty and students, including web-based subject research guides.
  • Participates in the general orientation and instruction programme.
  • Provides health sciences related instruction for reference librarians and assistants.
  • Tutors a small group in the first year or second year case-based learning, as required.
  • Participates in curriculum renewal.
COLLECTIONS
  • Selects appropriate material for the medical sciences reference and reserve collections.
  • Develops a strategy for building knowledge of the reference and main collections and keeps abreast of new resources.
  • Selects print and digital resources for the main collection in medical sciences, in collaboration with SMP faculty and with medical sciences librarians from partner universities
  • Develops and reviews collections policies and vendor profiles on a regular basis.
  • Undertakes self-initiated reviews of reference and general collections relying on established guidelines for withdrawal or removal to compact shelving.
MEETINGS AND COMMITTEES
  • Participates on SMP and library committees and assists, as appropriate, in other short-term library projects.
  • Participates on Library and University committees, councils, task forces and teams.
  • Actively participates in and collaborates with UBC Faculty of Medicine to ensure a smooth transition of curriculum renewal as it pertains to library services and pilot projects in the Southern Medical Program.
RELATIONSHIPS AND COMMUNICATIONS
  • Develops and maintains an active, collaborative working relationship with the medical librarians in the partner hospital and university libraries.
  • Develops and maintains an active, collaborative working relationship with SMP faculty, staff, and students on matters dealing with informatics, collections and reference activities.
  • Develops and maintains an active, collaborative relationship with UBC librarians regarding the planning and provision of library collections, services and space on the Okanagan Campus.
EVALUATION
  • Develops, monitors and reports on accountability measures for SMP library services.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SCHOLARSHIP

  • Monitors fiscal year expenditures of relevant departments/programs and deals with over expenditures according to established principles.
  • Develops the annual SMP library budget in concert with other undergraduate medicine program librarians. Working with the SMP Financial Officer and SMP Administrative Director, prepares the draft budget request for submission to the Undergraduate Medical Education Executive (UMEX).
ADMINISTRATION
  • Interprets and communicates UBC Library policies and procedures to faculty, staff, and students and keeps up-to-date on the latest library policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to the policy and planning discussions in various forums as part of the Libraries’ strategic planning activity.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
  • Provides direction and manages staff performing functions of an administrative nature within the Library.
