**UPDATE: All went well last night. No reported problems. (knock on wood)**

Just a heads up that EZproxy (which many people use for off-campus access to Library resources) will be down at 6:00 pm today for an upgrade. Down-time expected to be brief. If you experience EZproxy problems after, say, 6:30 pm, please report them to our Help Form. Thanks!

Primo at UBC

UBC Library is currently implementing Primo, the Ex Libris next-generation discovery and delivery tool that helps expose local and remote reources to our users. It functions as a federated search, discovery and delivery tool that will sit on top of our many content silos [catalogue, Metalib database quick sets, eLinks, cIRcle, digital collections in ContentDM, etc.].  It will allow users to search for a term and get results from all of our different  electronic resources within one search interface.  The results display will give our users more control over their search results by providing options for faceted browsing.  Facets enable users to limit searches by location, availability, collection, language, subject, author, publisher, call number range, etc.

UBC Library is implementing Primo  for a variety of reasons:

  • to address LibQual user feedback regarding the need to improve the findability of our electronic resources
  • to expose more electronic and print resources to our users
  • to offer our users a more satisfactory searching and browsing interface and experience
  • to use a proven and successful tool that complements our suite of Ex Libris tools (Voyager, SFX and MetaLib)

Our current federated search tool  OneSearch currently allows users to enter a search term once and get links to results that pass them through to various sources such as the catalogue, article databases via Metalib, etc. Primo will improve greatly on this by searching various sources simultaneously and delivering merged search results directly to users, along with added functionality such as limiting by facets, focusing on scopes, and others. Initially, our beta version of Primo will include:

  • library catalogue
  • online databases via Metalib
  • journal titles via SFX
  • digital collections in CONTENTdm (images) and DSpace (electronic theses and other objects in cIRcle)

In terms of project status, our test server and production servers are installed and our test server configuration should be completed and ready for viewing by mid-June. Once initial testing is complete, we will release the URL to the UBC Library community so that you can take a look at the initial Primo configuration. We will encourage all of you to play around with Primo and report any problems through a feedback submission form. Later in the summer, we will offer one or two brown bag sessions for a more detailed look at Primo’s functionality. By the beginning of September we are hoping to go live with Primo Beta and provide a link to it on the Library Labs page in order to solicit feedback from all library users. Dates for the final release of Primo are yet to be determined.
